Rensselaer County Democratic Minority Legislators to Recognize December as Buy Local Month
TROY, NY — The Rensselaer County Democrats submitted a resolution on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, officially recognizing December as Buy Local Month in Rensselaer County. The resolution celebrates the vital role that locally owned businesses play in strengthening the economy, supporting community organizations, and preserving the character of the region.
“Local businesses are the heartbeat of our neighborhoods,” said Legislator Ken Zalewski. “They’re not just storefronts — they’re our neighbors, our friends, and our community partners. By designating December as Buy Local Month, we’re encouraging residents to support the businesses that support us all year long.”
The resolution highlights several key benefits of shopping locally, including reduced environmental impact, increased charitable contributions to local causes, and stronger community ties. It also notes that small businesses are the largest employers nationwide and provide personalized service that exceeds expectations.
Legislator Gary Galuski emphasized the broader impact of local entrepreneurship: “When we invest in local businesses, we’re investing in families, in innovation, and in the future of Rensselaer County. This resolution is a call to action — to choose local, to build local, and to thrive together.”
The Legislature encourages residents to make a conscious effort throughout December to shop at locally owned stores, dine at local restaurants, and utilize local services. The initiative aims to boost holiday sales for small businesses and raise awareness of their year-round contributions.
“Every dollar spent locally recirculates in our economy, creating jobs, funding public services, and fostering a sense of pride in our community,” said Deputy Minority Leader Nina Nichols. “Buy Local Month is more than a campaign — it’s a celebration of who small business owners are and what they do.”
