GOP Majority Blocks Bipartisan Resolution Celebrating the U.S. Constitution and First Amendment

TROY, NY — In a surprising turn during Tuesday’s legislative session, the Republican majority of the Rensselaer County Legislature declined to support a bipartisan resolution introduced by the Democratic Minority affirming unwavering support for the United States Constitution and the First Amendment.

The resolution, which had been amended to include language honoring a prior GOP-sponsored amendment, was crafted to reflect shared values across party lines. It emphasized the foundational importance of free speech, a free press, the right to assemble, and the freedom to petition the government—principles enshrined in the First Amendment and central to American democracy.

“In a time when political divisions run deep, this resolution was meant to be a bridge,” said Legislator Gary Galuski. “We honored the GOP’s amendment in good faith, believing that affirming our Constitution should transcend party politics. Their refusal to support it is deeply disappointing and would make one question the GOP’s commitment to democracy.”

The resolution cited bipartisan concerns over federal overreach and censorship, including the controversial Disinformation Governance Board created by the Department of Homeland Security in 2022. It called for vigilance against any attempts to suppress dissenting voices or restrict access to information.

Legislator Ken Zalewski expressing frustration at the GOP’s reversal, stated “We amended the resolution to reflect their priorities. We acknowledged their concerns. Yet when it came time to stand together for the Constitution, they chose partisanship over principle.”

The resolution also highlighted the role of local institutions and educators in fostering civic engagement and open discourse. Legislator Mark Fleming added, “This was about protecting the soul of our democracy. The GOP’s decision not to support it sends the wrong message to their constituents.”

Despite the setback, Democratic legislators remain committed to advancing bipartisan efforts that uphold the Constitution and protect civil liberties. The resolution will remain on record as a testament to the Minority’s dedication to unity and democratic values.
