Monthly Report – March 2025

Condemning the January 6 pardons – For the March meeting the Rensselaer County Democratic Minority Legislators filed legislation (P/35) condemning the Presidential pardons of any January 6, 2021, rioters who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol police officers.

Minority Democrats expressed their strong objection to the broad stroke action of President Trump who issued roughly 1,500 pardons and commuted the sentences of 14 of his supporters in connection with the brutal attack on the U.S. Capital on Jan. 6, 2021, when thousands of them stormed the building amid false claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

Sadly, the resolution never made it out of committee, as the Republican Majority (Hoffman, Herrington, Loveridge) rejected legislation to support our law enforcement personnel, who were brutalized, and some killed, while claiming to be ‘Backing the Blue’. This hypocrisy is disgraceful and insulting to our justice system.

State of the County Address – Attracting and supporting new business opportunities, both large and small, are a cornerstone in stimulating job creation in our county, as well as in retaining a solid tax revenue. The Minority was encouraged to hear about new projects to be accomplished in the near future: the “Bridge Project” in the downtown Troy Quackenbush Building is a collaborative project with RPI and will become a cornerstone to further economic growth by retaining future entrepreneurs and turning their ideas into inventions; the renovation of the Van Rensselaer Manor; a new and larger location for the Board of Elections in the former Susan Odell Taylor School; necessary upgrades and renovations to all the highway garages; and the possibility of a new recreation area for our county residents, are just a few of the projects that will improve services and quality of life in Rensselaer County.
