Monthly Report – April 2025

Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act – For the April meeting the Rensselaer County Democratic Minority filed legislation (P/47) in support of the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (S.1464 and A.1749) that the NYS Senate and Assembly have been tweaking and re-introduced for a vote.

Sadly, but not surprising the Republican Majority (Hoffman, Herrington and Loveridge) rejected our resolution (as they always do) and would not let the resolution get to the floor for a full membership vote. It seems incongruous that they are posing for photos at recycling events, while rejecting efforts to reduce such waste.

Annual garbage fees, landfill issues and the associated expenses to County residents are not going away.

So, why not support the reduction in packaging waste, improve recyclables, remove toxins in packaging materials, support municipal recycling programs and infrastructure to alleviate the need for recycling, especially since the cost to reduce and recycle are to be borne by the manufacturers?

We encourage you to ask your legislator on their reasoning, especially since the bill is supported by many different organizations, such as the American Lung Association, NYPIRG, NYSAC, Riverkeeper, Protect the Adirondacks and the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter to name a few.
