Walter Bethel Honor A Deceased Veteran

WALTER HARRY BETHEL
1924-1942
FAMILY HISTORY:
Walter Harry Bethel was born on November 12, 1924 in Milford, Massachusetts to Walter Daniel Bethel and Natalina “Tillie” Donini Bethel. Walter was the brother of Olive, Robert and the late Doris.
EDUCATION:
Walter attended Cohoes High School.
HISTORY:
Walter Harry Bethel enlisted in the United States Navy on December 11, 1941. He was a Seaman 2nd Class, serving abroad the USS Ingraham. On August 22, 1942, Seaman 2nd Class Bethel along with his crew were sent on a mission off the coast of Nova Scotia, Escort (Convoy) duty. During the mission, USS Ingraham collided with the oil tanker, USS Chemung AO-30, Convoy AT-20; causing USS Ingraham to sink. Seaman 2nd Class Bethel was declared Killed in Action on August 23, 1943.
Seaman 2nd Class Bethel became the recipient of the Purple Heart, American Campaign Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.

Walter worked the running folding machine at Field & Hatch Knitting Co. in Cohoes.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:
Walter enjoyed boxing and baseball.
Special sessions may also be convened at the request of the Chairperson.
The agenda for a regular session is available on the Thursday preceding the meeting. Members of the public have the opportunity to speak on issues contained in the agenda for one-half hour prior to the opening of the meeting.
We also have a Public Forum night; this is a great opportunity for the Public to make comments to the full Legislative Body. It is held on the Wednesday of the week preceding our regular monthly meeting in Chambers beginning at 6:00 p.m.
