Rensselaer County Democratic Legislators Condemn ICE Operations, Call for Accountability and Reform

Democratic members of the Rensselaer County Legislature introduced a resolution for consideration for the February 10 Regular Meeting condemning recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and urging comprehensive reforms to protect the safety, rights, and dignity of all county residents.

The resolution cites the deaths of U.S. citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Jeffrey Pretti, calling for a full and impartial investigation into the actions of the ICE agents involved. It further criticizes federal officials for promoting what the resolution describes as a “false narrative” that assigns blame before all facts have been established.

“Reckless operations by ICE are trampling on fundamental rights and freedoms, putting innocent working people in danger rather than keeping communities safe,” said Legislator Mary Frances Sabo. “Members of the public who spoke at the recent forum expressed deep concern, fear, and frustration. Despite the public outcry, the resolution was defeated in the Rules Committee along party lines, preventing it from reaching the full 19-member Legislature for a vote.

At the February 4 Public Forum, speakers voiced disappointment that the Republican majority blocked the measure from advancing. Many urged bipartisan collaboration to refine the resolution and allow all legislators — and by extension, all constituents — the opportunity to weigh in.

“The people of Rensselaer County deserve to have this issue debated openly,” stated Deputy Minority Leader Nina Nichols. “A vote of this magnitude should not be silenced in committee. Every representative should have the chance to stand before their constituents and make their position known.”

Democratic members reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing oversight, transparency, and reforms that ensure the safety and civil rights of all
