Democratic Minority Office Responds to 2026 Rensselaer County Tentative Budget
TROY, NY — The Democratic Minority Office of the Rensselaer County Legislature has issued its formal response to the County’s 2026 Tentative Budget, recognizing both the fiscal progress and the opportunities for strategic investment that lie ahead.
“We acknowledge the significance of the 2026 budget and commend the County’s improved financial outlook,” said Deputy Minority Leader Nina Nichols. “Windfall revenues from sales tax and federal stimulus programs like the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the Biden Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) have created a rare opportunity to invest in our community’s future.”
The Minority Office emphasized the importance of using these funds to reduce taxpayer burden while enhancing essential services. Among the key priorities outlined:
- Establishing a county wide animal shelter
- Exploring reliable ambulance service models across the county
- Reinstating legal counsel for the Minority Office to ensure representation for all residents
- Fully funding the Cornell Cooperative Extension 2026 budget request
- Upgrading aging infrastructure, including sewer systems
- Creating a dedicated tourism fund from hotel tax revenue
- Institutionalizing the Shared Services Initiative for long-term efficiency
- Expanding green initiatives for sustainability
- Offering annual health insurance buyout incentives to reduce costs
“We must protect our natural resources, support our cultural and educational institutions, and ensure that every resident benefits from these financial gains,” Legislator Ken Zalewski stated. “We look forward to working collaboratively to shape a budget that reflects the best interests of Rensselaer County.”
