FAMILY HISTORY:
Andrew J. Carras was born on August 6, 1924 in Albany, New York. He was the son of the late George and Helen (Tenzar) Carras, and brother to James, William, Catherine, Peter, John, Francis, Mary, and Vincent
EDUCATION:
Andrew grew up in Albany, New York, and attended Phillip Livingston High School, leaving before graduation to join the Navy. He lied about his age so that he could serve, his was not yet 18 years old. Andrew later resided in East Greenbush, New York
HISTORY:
In 1941, Andrew enlisted in the United States Navy. Andrew was assigned to the destroyer USS Madison DD425 for the duration of the war. He was the ships cook third class. During his tour of duty, the USS Madison was involved in a variety of conflicts. Andrew was awarded the European African Eastern Area Campaign Medal, European African Eastern Campaign Ribbon, American Area Campaign Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon
PERSONAL:
Andrew married his wife, Lois (Kearney) Carras on May 8, 1946 in Albany. Together they had three children: Helen, Linda, Kennedy, and Lillian; three grandchildren: Elizabeth, Melissa, and Brian; Four great grandchildren: Rachel, Lauren, Adam, and Abigail; and one great great grandchild; Lincoln
WORK EXPERIENCE:
After his Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy on November 18, 1945, Andrew became employed by Tobin Packing Company in West Albany, New York and worked in various positions until the plant closed in 1980. After his retirement from Tobin Packing, Andrew started working for the Town of East Greenbush Water Department from 1980 until 1986, when he retired
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:
Andrew was a member of East Greenbush Fire Company, and Melvin roads American Legion. He served on the East Greenbush Zoning Board of Appeals and as an East Greenbush Committeeman. He loved to travel with his wife and family, traveling to almost all of the 50 states. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, golfing and spending time with family and friends
Sadly, on January 28, 2017, Andrew passed away and was laid to rest at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in East Greenbush, New York
Special sessions may also be convened at the request of the Chairperson.
The agenda for a regular session is available on the Thursday preceding the meeting. Members of the public have the opportunity to speak on issues contained in the agenda for one-half hour prior to the opening of the meeting.
We also have a Public Forum night; this is a great opportunity for the Public to make comments to the full Legislative Body. It is held on the Wednesday of the week preceding our regular monthly meeting in Chambers beginning at 6:00 p.m.
