August 2022 Honor A Deceased Veteran- Samuel Abate
August 8, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Samuel Abate was born on January 8, 1921 in San Martino, Italy to the late Michele and Anna Simeione Abate. He was the brother of Anthony, Domenico and Carlo.
Sam immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1933 and resided in Troy, New York the rest of his life. He was a graduate of Troy High School.
On August 5, 1942, Sam enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He was sent to the Great Lakes Training Command for “boot camp”, and upon graduation from there he received orders to the Navy’s Aviation Metalsmith School in Norman, Oklahoma. Sam was then assigned to Fleet Air wing 17, HedRon aboard the USS Tangier, a seaplane tender.
While aboard the Tangier, Sam repaired the Navy’s tough PBY Catalina seaplanes of “Black Cat Warrior” fame, and flew reconnaissance patrols aboard these aircrafts as an observer. Sam’s last duty station was Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego from where he was honorably discharged on October 4, 1945.
On April 1, 1945, Sam married his wife Concetta Pisanello Abate. Together they have three loving children: Michael, Anthony and Anne; grandchildren: David, Anthony, Stephen, Daniel and Rachel; and great-grandchildren: Lucas, Cristian and Maria, Colin and Jocelyn.
Sam was employed as a metal worker for Local #83 in Albany, New York for 40 years, until his retirement in 1967.
During his free time, Same enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, reading, and playing golf. Sam was very active with the Sheet Metal Workers Union #83, with which he served in many different capacities. He was instrumental with their apprentice vocational schools in both Troy and Albany.
Sadly, on March 29, 2008 Sam passed away.
