City of Troy Legislator Peter D. Grimm Announces Retirement from Public Service
TROY, NY – After two decades of dedicated service to the City of Troy and its residents, Legislator Peter D. Grimm has announced his retirement from public service. Grimm, who has served for 20 years in the legislature and spent the past 10 years as Minority Leader for county Democrats, has decided not to seek re-election and will retire from Public Service at the end of his term in December.
Throughout his tenure, Grimm has been a steadfast advocate for the people of Troy, championing numerous initiatives to improve the lives of residents. He has played an instrumental role in advancing voting rights, supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, and advocating for environmental protections, including efforts to expand the Bigger Better Bottle Bill.
Re-elected in 2021, Grimm currently serves as the Minority Leader of the Rensselaer County Legislature. Representing the City of Troy, he brings enthusiasm and energy to the city’s civic spirit. An active community volunteer in Troy for decades, he believes in the effectiveness of grassroots participation in community quality-of-life issues.
Grimm is President and a founding board member of “Friends of Prospect Park,” an organization dedicated to preserving and rejuvenating one of Troy’s outstanding natural and recreational resources. He also founded the “Clean Alleys” program, a volunteer effort to make Troy’s alleys cleaner and safer, and was a founding board member of Troy United Ink, a publication devoted to strengthening pride in Troy by highlighting its diverse neighborhoods. Additionally, Grimm is a past member of the F. Warren Travers Supreme Court Library, a current member of the Commission on Economic Opportunity board, and an appointed member of the NYS Committee on Open Government.
Bringing a unique skill set to his legislative position, Grimm has had a successful career as a businessman and entrepreneur. He currently serves as Associate Vice President of Institutional Events at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and has previously worked as Special Projects Manager for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Director of University Events at RPI, and Manager and founder of The Old Daley Inn Catering Company. His passion for planning and organizing has been widely recognized by colleagues and constituents alike, and his hard work, commitment, and integrity have offered the Troy community unparalleled direction and leadership.
As County Legislator representing the City of Troy, Grimm serves on the Budget and Finance Committee and the Rules and Legislative Operations Committee. During his tenure, he has worked to strengthen environmental protections, supported dedicated funds to boost tourism, voted to improve veteran’s benefits, and continues to fight for fair and equal representation.
Reflecting on his service, Grimm expressed gratitude to his colleagues and constituents, stating, “Serving the people of Troy has been the honor of a lifetime. I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made together, from protecting voting rights to tirelessly advocating for equity, equality and justice. I look forward to seeing the next generation of leaders continue this important work.”
