Rensselaer County Minority Office – Monthly Report – June 2025
Pickleball Courts – For the last two months residents of Rensselaer County gathered at the Rensselaer County Government Center at 99 Troy Road for the Public Forum to voice their strong opposition to the proposed legislation allocating $4 million for the construction of eight new pickleball courts. In a passionate appeal to county legislators, community members urged decision-makers to prioritize more urgent needs that would serve the greater good. Speakers emphasized that while pickleball courts already exist throughout the county, additional spending on new courts should not take precedence over initiatives aimed at improving public health and quality of life. Among the alternative proposals presented were the development of much-needed trails, the establishment of a county animal shelter, and the creation of an ambulance service that could save lives. Residents urged the legislature to reconsider the proposal and redirect funds toward initiatives that provide meaningful and necessary support to the community. On Monday afternoon the resolution G/254/25 was withdrawn by sponsor.
Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) – At Tuesday’s meeting the legislature re-appointed Legislator Tom Grant to be Board of Trustees. Over the past year, HVCC has faced a series of challenges that have heightened public scrutiny and engagement. Concerns surrounding governance, financial stewardship, and institutional accountability have reinforced the need for trustees who are willing to ask tough questions and advocate for meaningful change. As HVCC continues to navigate ongoing concerns and increased public awareness, Minority Democrats reminded Grant that his role on the Board will be to stand up and ask the difficult questions, challenge the status quo when needed and demand accuracy and transparency in all financial matters.
