Monthly Report – August 2025

Hoosick Street Resolution — At the regular meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature on Tuesday evening, August 12, 2025, the Republican Majority refused to heed the call of dozens of concerned residents and Democratic legislators urging a temporary moratorium on new development in the Town of Brunswick. The proposed pause aimed to address long-standing issues of traffic congestion, pollution, public safety, and declining quality of life along the Hoosick Road/Street Corridor.

For two consecutive weeks, residents from across the political spectrum have passionately addressed the Legislature, sharing personal stories of how unchecked development has disrupted their lives and endangered their neighborhoods. Despite this bipartisan outcry, the GOP Majority declined to incorporate an amendment from the Democratic Minority that would have broadened a resolution urging the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) to investigate traffic issues in the area.

The Democratic Minority’s amendment sought to include language calling for a temporary halt to new development until meaningful dialogue and planning could occur among local and state agencies. Residents have repeatedly cited worsening traffic, increased pollution, and safety hazards as reasons for immediate action.

Despite the GOP Majority’s refusal to act, the Democratic Minority reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for residents and pursuing solutions that prioritize public well-being over unchecked development. The Democratic Minority plans to continue engaging with residents, local officials, and state agencies to push for a comprehensive response to the crisis in Brunswick and the broader Hoosick Corridor.
