Monthly Report – August 2023

Hoosick Falls Senior Center – At the August 8th Regular Meeting the Rensselaer County Legislature voted to move the Hoosick Falls Senior Center from the current location at the John Murphy Building on Church Street to the former Dollar Tree store on NYS Route 22 south of the village.

While the Minority Legislators are very much in favor of an updated Hoosick Falls Senior Center, the process failed to seek input from the community and did not include the public in making the decision on the future of their Center. The Minority office listened to the cry from community stakeholders and officials who felt deprived of being part of the process that would decide the future of the Senior Center.

In addition, the Minority Legislators were denied pertinent and requested backup information on the project by the GOP Majority, Public Health Director, Mary Fran Wachunas, and Director of Central Services, Jim Gordon. Much of this information, pertaining to clean drinking water, septic safety, purchase contracts, and water and sewer inspection reports of the proposed location for the new Senior Center were not provided to the local community or to the full legislature. The lack of transparency and denial of such information makes it impossible for residents of Rensselaer County to have trust in their representatives and makes it impossible for Minority Legislators to vote in favor of a project that they have been denied information on, leaving many important concerns unanswered.
