SUMMARY:April 2022 Honor A Deceased Veteran - Henry E. Leavitt
DESCRIPTION:MARCH 2022 \nHENRY E. LEAVITT\n1921-2018 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nHenry “Pat” E. Leavitt was born on March 30\, 1921 in Montpelier\, Vermont to the late Henry and Lily Leavitt. He was the brother of Joseph Leavitt\, Catherine Atchinson and Isabella Swartz. \nEDUCATION:\nPat grew up and lived in East Greenbush\, New York\, until he later moved to Saratoga Springs\, New York. He attended Philip Schuyler High School\, Carnegie Institute of Technology for Civil Engineering and Stout Institute for Industrial Arts. \nHISTORY:\nPat was drafted into the United States Army\, and was set to report to Camp Upton in New York on November 11\, 1942. He was a member of the 20th Armored Division\, U.S. 7th Army\, B Company\, 220th Engineer Battalion\, which was one of three Divisions to liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp during the Battle of Munich in 1995. \nFor his service\, Pat was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal\, Good Conduct Medal\, American Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal\, and on November 24\, 1945\, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army at Camp Cooke in California. \nPERSONAL:\nPat married his loving wife\, Irma Kemmy Leavitt\, on January 16\, 1943 at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma. They were married for 74 years\, until sadly Irma passed in 2015. Together they have children: Judy\, John\, Sally and Susan; grandchildren: Pat\, Matt\, Joe\, Heather\, Brooke\, Damian and April\, and 9 great-grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nPat worked for many years for New York Telephone\, later Verizon in Albany\, as a lineman\, installer and a test board technician. Prior to that\, he had been dairy farmer. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nAlways kind and giving\, Pat was an avid gardener and loved sharing his good fortune with family and friends. \nSadly\, on November 25\, 2018 Pat passed away. \n  \n

SUMMARY:March 2022 Honor A Deceased Veteran Joseph M. Spairana\, Sr.
DESCRIPTION:JOSEPH M. SPAIRANA\, SR.\n1917-2005 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nJoseph M. Spairana\, Sr. was born on August 17\, 1917 in Troy\, New York to the late John J. and Mary Ann Carnevale Spairana. He was the brother of Michael\, Rita and John. \nEDUCATION:\nJoseph graduated from Catholic Central High School and the Veterans Vocational School (now HVCC)\, and later went on to attend Russell Sage College Evening Division. \nHISTORY:\nOn April 14\, 1942\, Joseph was set to report in Albany\, New York after being drafted into the United States Army. He went on to serve during World War II in the European Theatre of Operation with General Patton’s Third Army. For his service in the Army\, Joseph was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon\, and on April 5\, 1945 he separated from the Army. \nPERSONAL:\nOn March 27\, 1942\, Joseph married his wife\, Josephine Quick Spairana\, at St. Rita’s Church in Cohoes\, New York. Together they have three loving children: Jeffery\, Joseph Jr. and Jan; and grandchildren: Jeffery\, Jeanette\, Jason\, Amy\, Lori\, Victor and James. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJoseph had a variety of different jobs throughout his career. He was the sales manager for the Charles Dauchy Paint Company in Troy and was a salesman and estimator for the Grimm Building Materials Company in Troy. Joseph then went on become the Director of the Rensselaer County Veterans Service Agency\, until he moved on to become the veterans counselor at Hudson Valley Community College\, where he retired from at the age of 75. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJoseph was always an active member in his community no matter where he lived. He was a past president of both the United Commercial Travelers and the Lansingburgh Rotary Cub\, a member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans\, the Lansingburgh Boys and Girls Club\, Grand Marshall Veterans Day Parade and a neighborhood commissioner for the Uncle Sam Boy Scouts Council for over 15 years. \nAs an active member of St. Augustine’s Church parish family\, Joseph was a longtime member of the Bingo committee\, a member of the former bazaar committee and an usher for more than 35 years. After he retired\, Joseph and his wife spent their winters down South\, where he belonged to the Card and Billiard Clubs. He enjoyed playing cards with the “Monday Night” group of Lansingburgh\, and his hobby was growing beautiful roses and delicious tomatoes. \nSadly\, on April 28\, 2005 Joseph passed away.

DESCRIPTION:RICHARD PAUL JANSSON\n1936-2020 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRichard Paul Jansson was born on July 23\, 1936 in Yonkers\, New York to the late Sven and Violet Jansson. He was the brother of Wesley\, Edith\, David\, and the late Ernest\, Florence and William\, and half-brother to Mary. \nEDUCATION:\nRichard grew up in Averill Park\, New York and attended Averill Park High School from 1950-1953. \nHISTORY:\nRichard enlisted in the United States Navy on August 23\, 1954 in Albany\, New York. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Antietam CVS-36 and went on to serve in the United States Naval Reserves until August 22\, 1962. \nPERSONAL:\nWhen Richard was a young man\, he met the love of his life\, Joan Ogden\, and on May 19\, 1956 they got married. They were married for over 63 loving years until sadly Joan passed away in 2019. They will both be dearly missed by their daughters Brenda and Deborah; grandchildren Terrence\, Ricky\, Amber and Brandon; and great-grandchildren Brittney\, Ricky\, Jr.\, Julian\, Jennifer\, Bentley\, Jesse\, Riley and Erica. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nFor many years\, Richard worked as a firefighter for Electric Boat. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nRichard liked skeet shooting\, hunting\, fishing and bowling. After retirement\, he enjoyed spending time at the Colchester Senior Center playing cards and Pinnacle. He also drove as a school bus driver for handicapped children in retirement. Above all\, Richard loved spending time with his family and friends. \nSadly\, on January 22\, 2020 Richard passed away.

DESCRIPTION:  \nTHOMAS PETER DIGIORGIO\n1931-2021 \n \n  \nFAMILY HISTORY: \nThomas “Tom” Peter DiGiorgio was born on June 8\, 1931 in Elizabeth\, New Jersey to the late Pietro and Agostilia Roccatani DiGiorgio\, who instilled in him the values of hard work\, fairness to all\, a love of good home-cooking and some homemade vino. He was the brother of Carlo DiGiorgio and the late Anna Romel. \nEDUCATION: \nIn 1950\, Tom trained as a cabinetmaker at Thomas Edison High School. \nHISTORY: \nTom enlisted in the United State Navy on May 29\, 1951 in New York\, New York. He served aboard the USS Willard Keith\, DD-775 as a metalsmith. For his service\, Tom was awarded the National Defense Ribbon\, Navy Occupation Medal\, Korean Medal and the United Nations Medal. Tom separated from the United States Navy on April 22\, 1955. \nPERSONAL: \nTom was married to Beatrice Annarelli from 1957-1994\, and together they had 4 children; Diane\, Peter\, Thomas and Patricia\, and 5 grandchildren; Kaitlin\, Thomas\, Kristin\, Bradley\, and Ryan. Tom was predeceased by his partner of many years\, Anne Popielarski. \nTom has lived all over the Eastern part of the United States. After growing up in Elizabeth\, New Jersey\, Tom went on to raise his family in Rockaway Beach\, New York and Coram\, Long Island. He later relocated to the Poconos before moving to Castleton\, New York in 2015 to live with his daughter\, Diane due to his advancing dementia. \nWORK EXPERIENCE: \nTom was an accomplished carpenter and jack-of-all-trades. He was a self-employed carpenter/builder\, a proprietor of Dee’s Hardware and Lumber in Coram\, New York and a construction manager on numerous projects; including homes\, restaurants and gas stations in the Eastern United States. Tom didn’t let much slow him down\, and he continued working\, building and remodeling well into his 80’s. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS: \nTom loved the beach\, listening to music\, bantering in Italian and sharing time with loved ones. He also loved ballroom dancing and was active in the amateur dance circuit in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Tom won many dance competitions\, and in 2018 he received a Veterans Creative Arts Recognition for his dancing. \nTom loved life and never had a dull moment. In 2005\, Tom and his family took a trip to his ancestral village of Priverno\, Italy to visit extended family\, and in 2017\, Tom and his daughter had the honor of participating in a Veteran’s Patriot Flight to Washington DC to visit memorials. \nSadly\, on January 10\, 2021 Tom passed away.

DESCRIPTION:THOMAS STANLEY OSTROWSKI\n1943-2018 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nThomas “Tom” Stanley Ostrowski was born on April\, 7 1943 in Brooklyn\, New York to the late Frances Ostarch Ostrowski and Bruno Ostrowski\, and was the brother of the late Barbara Ostarch Rothrock. \nEDUCATION:\nTom was raised in Catskill\, New York\, where he graduated from St. Patrick’s Elementary and High School before moving to Troy\, New York. He also went on to graduate from Hudson Valley Community College and the College of St. Rose\, earning a degree in business and computer. \nHISTORY:\nTom enlisted in the United States Navy on October 11\, 1966 in Buffalo\, New York\, serving with the rank of petty officer second class as a draftsman. For his service\, Tom was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 1\, 1970. \nPERSONAL:\nOn May 24\, 1969\, Tom married his wife\, Susan Ann Mangione at Sacred Heart Church in Troy\, New York. He is the beloved father of Kristen Ostrowski Caird\, Stephanie Ostrowski and Thomas J. Ostrowski\, grandfather to Abbilyn\, Natalie\, Emily and Teegen and also survived by several nieces\, nephews\, cousins and friends. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nTom was employed by General Electric in the large stream turbine division as an engineer draftsman for 32 years. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nTom was an active member of the community. He was a member of Trout Unlimited Home Waters Chapter\, Early Engine Club of Schaghticoke\, Trout Unlimited Fly Fishing Instructor\, and was a Sacred Heart communicant\, usher\, money counter and helped with bingo. Tom was an avid fisherman\, fly tyer\, photographer\, woodworker\, bird house maker\, and the greatest grandfather. \nSadly\, on October 1\, 2018 Tom passed away. \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n

He is the son of Linda Fryer (Brett McNab) and Timothy Snyder\, and stepson to Nicole Cassino. Nathan was the brother of Kristyn (Gary) Donnelly\, Stephanie (Jeff) Snyder\, Noah Snyder\, twin brother to Nicholas (Morgan) Snyder\, Brandon McNab and Cassandra McNab; grandson of John (Kathy) Snyder\, Pamela Hester and the late Donald and Alice Fryer; great-grandson of Lou Verinini; great-nephew of Carol Borst; nephew to David (Sue) Fryer\, Ruth Greminger\, Sue (Ed) Nestler\, Karen Warner\, and Laura (Patrick) Hegarty; cousin to Shea Hegarty\, Addison Hegarty\, Lori Jubic\, Kelly Mohl\, Tyler Greminger\, Michael Warner\, and Josh Fryer; uncle to Marley\, Annie\, Kennady\, Chase and the late Allie; and friend to Donna Gaito\, Bob Gaito\, and Sean Cook. \nEDUCATION:\nNathan grew up and resided in North Greenbush\, New York and attended schools in the Averill Park School District. He graduated from Averill Park High School in 2013. \nHISTORY:\nNathan enlisted in the United States Army on August 20\, 2013 in Albany\, New York. He served as an infantryman and served in Afghanistan from January of 2015 until October of 2015. Nathan was the recipient of many awards during his enlistment\, which included the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star\, Army Commendation Medal\, Army Achievement Medal\, Meritorious Unit Commendation\, Army Good Conduct Medal\, National Defense Service Medal\, Army Service Ribbon\, NATO Medal\, Combat Infantry Badge\, and the Air Assault Badge. Nathan was honorably discharged in 2016. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nBefore Nathan tragically passed away\, he had been working at the Troy Post Office\, and was in the process of reenlisting in the Army. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nNathan was also survived by his canine companions Sky\, Hudson and Koby. \nNathan enjoyed snowmobiling\, snowboarding\, hiking\, fishing\, and loved fitness activities.  He was a member of the East Greenbush VFW Post 7338. \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n

DESCRIPTION:JAMES HOWARD MINER\n1940-2017 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nJames Howard Miner was born on April 6\, 1940 in Ticonderoga\, New York to Charles Miner and Dorothy (Barber) Miner. He was the brother of the late Donald Miner\, who served in the United States Navy. \nEDUCATION:\nJames graduated from Hoosick Falls (Wood Memorial) High School in 1957\, and then went on to attend Hudson Valley Community College. \nHISTORY:\nJames enlisted in the United States Army on September 23\, 1963 in Albany\, New York\, serving with the rank of Specialist 4 E-4 during the Vietnam War. For his courageous service during the War\, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman Badge (Rifle M-1 and M-14). He separated from the Army on September 22\, 1969. \nPERSONAL:\nJames was also a devoted family man\, and loved to spend time with his partner and best friend of 27 years\, Gale E. Leva\, and their combined family which consisted of six children\, Brett (Natalie)\, Jason (Ami)\, Cherie\, Joseph\, Charles\, and Nicole (Martin); and 11 grandchildren\, David\, Zack\, Chad\, Timothy\, Samantha\, Madison\, Asher\, Elizabeth\, Janessa\, Alyssa and Silas. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJames was employed by Wood Flong Corporation in Hoosick Falls\, New York for 20 years as a Haynes Ford sales manager and salesperson. He also was a part owner of M&M Liquors in Greenwich\, New York\, a truck manager for Morrison Chevrolet in Bennington\, Vermont\, a salesperson for Independent Homes\, Inc.\, and spent 30 years as a bartender for special events. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJames loved boating\, golf\, fishing\, traveling and screaming at football games. He was an active member of the community and belonged to several organizations. He was a School Board member for 19 years\, President of the local union Wood Flong Corp\, Past Treasurer of Hoosick Falls Little League\, Hoosick Falls Country Club Board member and Golf and Handicap chairman\, Lifetime member of St. Stanislaus\, Hoosick Falls Kiwanis Club President and a member of the American Legion. James spent many of his last years seeing America in his motor home accompanied by his love\, Gale. \nSadly\, on April 11\, 2017 James passed away. \n

DESCRIPTION:ARTHUR T. JUDGE\n1920-1988 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nArthur T. Judge was born on July 27\, 1920 in Troy\, New York to the late Arthur Judge and the late Catherine Morrissey Judge. He was the brother of Catherine Mulheren and Virginia Doin\, and the late Henry Judge\, Margaret Leathem and Patrick Judge. \nEDUCATION:\nArthur graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1937\, where he was an outstanding athlete. When he returned from military service\, Arthur went on to attend the Evening Division of Russell Sage College. \nHISTORY:\nArthur enlisted in the United States Army on March 11\, 1943\, serving with a rank of Sergeant during World War II in the 204th Combat Engineers Construction Battalion in the European\, African and Middle Eastern Theaters of Operation\, including the Ardennes\, Central Europe\, Normandy\, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. On D-Day\, Arthur and his company stormed the beaches of Normandy. He has been awarded five battle stars\, and is the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal\, Sharp Shooter Medal\, and the Good Conduct Medal. Arthur was honorably discharged on October 31\, 1945. \nPERSONAL:\nArthur married his wife\, the late Elizabeth Campbell on June 19th\, 1949 at St. Peter’s Church in Troy\, New York. He was the father of four daughters; Kathleen Stallmer\, Elizabeth Simonik\, Patricia Murphy and Maureen Kim\, one son; Arthur Judge and had 14 grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nArthur was employed by the United States Postal Service for 25 years\, from 1947-1972. After he retired\, he went on to work as an Assistant City Assessor for the City of Troy for 11 years\, from 1975-1986. Arthur started out with the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in 1947\, and then worked his way up to a supervisor. On July 28\, 1956\, the United States Senate appointed him Postmaster of Troy\, New York. At the time\, Arthur was the youngest person to be appointed to this position. Throughout his postal career\, Arthur served as President of the Troy Local Clerks Association\, a Legislative Representative\, State Vice President of the New York State Federation of Postal Clerks\, was a member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors\, and was a member of the National Association of Postmasters. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nArthur was an active member of the community and belonged to several organizations. He was a member of the Father Kelly Chapter\, the Disabled American Veterans and the Noble-Callahan Post\, American Legion. Arthur served as a member of the Public Service Division of the United Fund Campaign of the Mohawk-Hudson Area\, from which he was awarded a citation for community service in 1961. He participated in City Parades\, Troy politics\, and his church\, where he was communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church. Arthur was a history buff who enjoyed golfing and going to the race track on his free time.

DESCRIPTION:John Russell Reitano\n1926-2005 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nJohn Russell Reitano was born on February 6\, 1926 in Troy\, New York to the late Mary (Marvelli) and Anthony Reitano. He was the brother of Kay\, Antoinette and Angeline. John grew up in Troy and later resided in Colonie\, New York and then Mechanicville\, New York. \nEDUCATION:\nHe attended St. Peter’s School in Troy from 1930-1938\, Troy High School from 1939-1942\, and later went on to attend Troy Business School. \nHISTORY:\nJohn enlisted in the United States Navy on November 2\, 1943 in Albany\, New York and served during World War II with the rank of Seaman First Class. He received bootcamp training at the Naval Training Center in Sampson\, New York. John served as gunners mate with ACORN 45 in helping with the liberation of the Philippine Islands. John also helped secure\, repair\, and provide fire cover for Sea Bees who were rebuilding landing strips at Sangly Point. \nJohn served at many vessels and stations throughout his time in the Navy. This included NRS Albany\, New York\, NTS Sampson\, New York\, AGC Norva\, AGC Brooklyn\, New York\, SS Paulsboro\, ABATU Lido Beach Long Island\, New York\, ACORN 45 Port Hueneme\, California\, ACORN 45 San Nicolas Island\, NAS Navy 961 and PSC Lido Beach Long Island\, New York. He was the proud recipient of multiple awards; American Theatre Medal\, Victory Medal\, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Medal. John was honorably discharged from the United States Navy on May 7\, 1946. \nPERSONAL:\nOn September 26\, 1949\, John married his wife\, Dorothy (Berlingieri) Reitano. Together they have two sons and their daughter-in-laws; John (Frances) and Paul (Peggy)\, three grandchildren; Kate (Chris)\, Justin (Nicole) and Nicholas (Ashley) and one great-grandchild; Liam. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJohn was a longtime produce manager for Price Chopper and the former Central markets\, and for a short time worked for Shop Rite and Wooltex. After retirement\, he enjoyed his job as a greeter for Wal-Mart\, where he was able to greet customers with his infectious smile and good will. \nJohn always had a love for music and was a bass and drums player. He was the well-known band leader for the Dixieland Ambassadors and Johnny Rei Trio. The Dixieland Ambassadors played in many Capital District parades and many other events. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nAlong with his music\, John enjoyed softball\, golf\, bowling and painting. He was an active member of Veterans of Lansingburgh\, past Commander of VFW Post 6928 in Mechanicville\, New York\, was a member of the Family Day in the Park committee since its inception and assisted with all the events and fundraising needs\, and was a member of the Italian Fraternal Society and the Assumption- St. Paul Church. John took part in the Family Day in the Park in Mechanicville\, the Troy Flag Day Parade\, and the Veterans of Lansingburgh Memorial Day Parade. \nSadly on March 21\, 2005\, John passed away. \n  \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n
