SUMMARY:March 2023 Honor A Deceased Veteran-Robert F. Vogt
DESCRIPTION:Robert F. Vogt\n1936-2004 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRobert F. Vogt was born on July 10\, 1936 in Troy\, NY to William and Helen (Knapp) Vogt. He was the brother of William Vogt who served in the U.S. Air Force. \nEDUCATION:\nRobert was born\, raised and lived in Troy\, New York for most of his life\, and attended Catholic Central High School\, Lansingburgh High School and LaSalle Institute. \nHISTORY:\nOn August 4\, 1953\, Robert enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in Albany\, New York\, and then headed to the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot\, Parris Island\, South Carolina where he received his basic training. After completing basic training\, Robert attended Airman School (Class P) at Marine Air Detachment\, Jacksonville\, Florida\, and then went on to receive his flight equipment course at the Naval Air Technical Training Unit in Lakehurst\, New Jersey. From there\, Robert went on to serve as a Basic Flight Equipmentman. Robert was honorably discharged with the rank of Private on November 15\, 1956 from the United States Marine Corps\, and for his service\, he received the National Defense Service Medal. \nPERSONAL:\nOn April 6\, 1958\, Robert married his wife Ann Cassino at St. Peter’s Church in Troy\, New York. Together they had four loving children: Robert\, Timothy\, Gary (deceased) and Patricia\, and 14 grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nRobert worked for many years at Bendix Corp. in Green Island\, New York as a machine operator in the friction materials division until he had to retire in 1985. He continued to work at HUDMO Valley Federal Credit Union\, where he previously served as President\, a member of the Board of Directors and later as Chairman of the Supervisory Committee\, a position that he held until his passing. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nHe was a retired member of the United Auto Workers Local #1508\, where he served for several years as the Recording Secretary\, a long-time member of the Friends of 112th Street and the American Legion Post #927 in Green Island\, a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church\, and a former Boy Scouts of America Leader for Pack 58. SUMMARY:December 2022 Honor A Deceased Veteran - Henry G. A. Higgitt
DESCRIPTION:Henry G. A. Higgitt\n1900-1950 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nHenry G. A. Higgitt was born on December 9\, 1900 in Troy\, New York to the William G. and Mary Agnes (Glasheen) Higgitt. He was the brother of Elizabeth\, Marcella\, Grace\, Loretta\, Agnes\, Florence\, William and John. \nEDUCATION:\nHenry was born and raised in Troy\, New York and attended schools in the Troy Public School System before deciding to enlist. \nHISTORY:\nHenry was a World War I and World War II Veteran and enlisted in the New York Army National Guard at the age of eighteen\, and served with Support Company\, 2nd Infantry Division. On December 30\, 1919\, he enlisted in the United States Navy in Albany\, New York. Henry served aboard the USS Eagle\, the USS Sacramento\, the USS Patonka and the USS Denebola. On January 6\, 1928\, Henry was honorably discharged. \nOn January 3\, 1944\, Henry decided to enlist again into the United States Naval Reserve in Boston\, Massachusetts. After he was placed on active duty\, Henry was assigned to the USS Mount Olympus\, and on June 9\, 1946\, he was again honorably discharged from the United States Navy. For his brave service\, Henry was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. \nPERSONAL:\nHenry married his wife\, Mabel Francis Linehan in 1927 in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, and together they had children: William\, Joseph\, Frank and Paul. Sadly in 1948\, Mabel passed away. On January 8\, 1949\, Henry married Julia Raleigh in Troy\, New York and together they had a son\, Henry. \nServing in the military runs in the family. While Henry was serving his country during World War II\, his son\, William\, was also serving in the U.S. Army. Eventually\, his other sons also went on to serve along with several of his grandsons. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nHenry was a hardworking man who worked various jobs throughout his life to make sure that his family was always taken care of. He worked for A. Lavelle Construction Company as an iron worker\, J.P. Squires Company where he worked as a smoker/cooker at the meat packing and processing facility\, Bethlehem Steel Company where he worked as a machinist and operator\, and built combat vessels for the Navy\, and Ludlow Valve Company where he was the chief engineer at the time of his sudden passing. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nHenry was a proud member of the Trojan Post VFW\, the Emerald Club and the National Association of Power Engineers. During his free time\, he enjoyed the outdoors\, especially the water\, coaching kids and attending veteran functions. \nSadly\, on June 27\, 1950 Henry passed away after becoming ill while umpiring a baseball game at Geer Field. \n  \n

SUMMARY:October 2022 Honor A Deceased Veteran - Robert Miller
DESCRIPTION:Robert E. Miller\n1945-2022 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRobert E. “Bob” Miller was born on July 15\, 1945 in Mooers\, New York to the late Robert and Clare (Hiermeier) Miller and was 1 of 15 children. \nEDUCATION:\nBob attended Ellenburg schools from 1950-1961 before deciding to enlist in the Army. \nHISTORY:\nOn December 30\, 1963\, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper. For his service\, he received the National Defense Service Medal\, and on April 12\, 1968 Bob was honorably discharged from the Army. \nPERSONAL:\nBob lived in and married his first wife\, Anna Elmore\, in London in 1967 and together they had a daughter Lucy. Bob moved to Troy\, New York in 1971\, and in 1977 he married his second wife\, Lorraine Grzyboski. Together they had children: Shannon\, Melissa\, Kelly\, Shelly\, Shawn and Kimberly who sadly passed away as an infant. He was a loving grandfather to 17 grandchildren and left behind his most loyal companion\, his dog Lily. Bob married his third wife\, Linda Hastings\, on April 15\, 2008 in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nBob and his second wife\, Lorraine were very active in the boxing world and together opened the Uncle Sam Boxing Club\, where they began their career in boxing. Bob ran his club out of its original location in Troy for 25 years. He was a trainer and a cut man\, and Lorraine was the promoter. They ran hundreds of amateur boxing shows locally and then began running professional shows as well. They even ran shows for Mike Tyson at the beginning of his career. After retiring from Shaker High School in 2002 after 25 years\, Bob moved back to Altona\, New York with his third wife\, Linda and built his house and boxing gym there. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nBob was very well known in the community and his boxing club helped thousands of youth and adults throughout the years\, he even offered free boxing classes for kids. Bob committed all of his life to advancing the sport of boxing and influenced many to make choices that led to a better life. He even had extra rooms at his boxing club that he let people who didn’t have much stay at for free or next to nothing. He was inducted into the NYS Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015 and was a proud member of the VFW. \nBob was still very active in the boxing world\, traveling all over the world as a cut man for fighters until his car accident on October 15\, 2016. Sadly\, Bob was left paralyzed from the chest down\, however\, he did not let this stop him from living his life to the fullest. He continued to do small boxing shows\, traveling to events and his grandkid’s games. Bob was always active in his family’s lives and was a loving\, funny\, amazing father and rarely ever missed his children’s sporting events or activities. He enjoyed hunting\, fishing\, the peacefulness of country living\, had a great sense of humor and was an avid sports fan who loved the Jets and Mets. Bob was a devoted husband to his loving wife\, Linda\, who never left his side. \nSadly\, on April 29\, 2022 Bob passed away. \n  \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n
