SUMMARY:Edward L. Pratt - Honor a Deceased Veteran Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Honoring Edward L. Pratt\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nEDWARD LEONARD PRATT\, 1923-2004\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nEdward Leonard Pratt was born in Chicago\, Illinois on October 18\, 1923 to the late Edward L. Pratt and Mary Catherine Gallagher.  Edward was the brother of William Pratt and he was predeceased by his sister\, Catherine Donnelly. \nEDUCATION:\nEdward was a graduate of St. John’s Academy\, class of 1941.  After the service\, Edward attended Siena College where he was a graduate\, class of 1956. \n HISTORY:\nEdward enlisted in the United States Army on August 26\, 1943 in Albany\, New York.  While serving as a Technician Fifth Grade\, Medical Department\, Medical Detachment in the 254th Infantry Regiment\, Edward received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for such “magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire”\, during the attack on the Siegfried Line.  Edward was also the proud recipient of the American Service Medal\, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal\, Good Conduct Medal\, Presidential Unit Citation and the World War II Victory Medal.  Edward was honorably discharged from the 142nd Infantry Regiment\, 36th Infantry Division as Sergeant on December 22\, 1945. \n PERSONAL:\nEdward married Lillian Elizabeth Spath on March 6\, 1943 at St. John’s Church in Rensselaer\, New York.  Edward is survived by two children\, Edward Pratt and Rosemary Crawford\, and four grandchildren\, Frank Costa\, Nick Costa\, Doreen Stewart and E6 Edward Costa\, United States Coast Guard.  He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law\, Jack and Mary Spath. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nEdward began his career in chemistry with Sterling Drug\, where he worked as a lab boy at Sterling Winthrop in the early 1940s.  After the war\, Edward returned to Sterling Drug and moved to the Analytical Chemistry Department at the Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in 1965.  In 1986\, Ed retired as the Director of Analytical Chemistry. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nEdward was a lifelong active parishioner in his church\, where he was a Eucharistic Minister\, lector and trustee.  He was on the board of the US Pharmacopeia for 12 years and an emeritus member of Sigma XI.  Edward was also active with the Knights of Columbus\, Council 267. \nEdward enjoyed golfing\, reading and research.  He was also very active in his children’s activities. \n  \n﻿

DESCRIPTION:Honoring William P. Wade\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nWILLIAM P. WADE\, 1922-1970\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nWilliam P. Wade was born in Troy\, New York on November 2\, 1922.  He was the son of William J. Wade and Julia M. Morris.  William was the brother of Robert J. Wade\, Florence Wade Filippone and Patricia Wade Bizarro. \nEDUCATION:\nWilliam attended St. Michael’s School and was a Troy High Graduate\, class of 1940. \n HISTORY:\nWilliam enlisted in the United States Navy on December 8\, 1942.  He was a Radioman Second Class and he served aboard the Navy Submarine Chaser USS SC-1319.  William was the proud recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars\, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 3 stars\, American Theater Ribbon\, Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.  William was honorably discharged on January 6\, 1946. \n PERSONAL:\nOn November 25\, 1945\, William married Bernice D. Walsh in St. Francis Church in Troy\, New York.  Together they had two children\, Thomas W. Wade and Edward J. Wade and five grandchildren\, Sheila Wade Duffy\, Kristin Wade\, William P. Wade. II\, Matthew Wade and Timothy Wade. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nWilliam worked for the New York Telephone Co.\, he was the Rensselaer County Commissioner of Social Services from 1965-1967 and he was the Rensselaer County Clerk from January 1\, 1970 until August 4\, 1970\, when he passed away.  William was also the Proprietor of Wade’s Wine Shop. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nWilliam was a member of the American Legion\, St. Mary’s Bowling League and Holy Name Society.  He was also the East Greenbush Democratic Chairman and a member of the Rensselaer County Democratic Committee. \nWilliam had a love for fishing and youth baseball. \n  \n  \n﻿

DESCRIPTION:Honoring Elton G. Cook\, Sr.\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nELTON GEORGE COOK\, SR.\, 1907-2004\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nElton George Cook\, Sr. was born in Waterford\, New York on September 4\, 1907.  He was son of the late Albert and Blanche Cook.  Elton is brother of the late James\, Ted and Wesley Cook\, Helen Cuniff and Florence Normington. \nEDUCATION:\nElton attended Waterford Academy. \n HISTORY:\nElton enlisted in the United States Army on October 29\, 1942.  He served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.  Elton was the proud recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.  He was honorably discharged on October 12\, 1945. \n PERSONAL:\nOn November 20\, 1954\, Elton married his wife\, the late Elizabeth Daleva Cook in St. Jean’s Church\, Troy\, New York.  Together they had two children\, Nicholas J. (Edie) Cook\, Sr. and the late Elton G. Cook\, Jr.  Elton is also survived by his grandchildren\, Nicholas J. Cook\, Jr.\, Amanda L. Cook and Zachary M. Cook\, as well as many nieces and nephews. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nElton was an ambulance driver for the former Leonard Hospital in Troy for 42 years. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nElton was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7466 in Poestenkill. He was a former member of the Cpl. Paul J. Baker Post VFW in Lansingburgh and Phoenix Lodge #58 F & AM in Lansingburgh.  Elton also served as captain of the Knickerbocker Steamer Co. #1 in Waterford from 1928-1935. \nElton had a love for fishing\, walking and listening to ambulance calls. \n  \n﻿﻿

DESCRIPTION:Honoring Gerald O’Brien\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nGERALD J. O’BRIEN\, 1934-2016\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nGerald J. O’Brien was born in Troy\, New York on May 24\, 1934.  He was the son of Joseph O’ Brien and Margaret (Hickey) O’Brien. \n EDUCATION:\nGerald attended St. Augustine School and Catholic Central High School.  After high school he attended Hudson Valley Community College. \n HISTORY:\nGerald enlisted in the United States Navy on September 8\, 1953 in Bainbridge\, Maryland.  He trained as a Seabee in Port Hueneme\, California and was stationed on the US Naval Base Trinidad.  Gerald was the proud recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.  He was honorably discharged on August 9\, 1955 \n PERSONAL:\nOn September 14\, 1957\, Gerald married his wife Barbara (Kelly) O’Brien in St. Joseph’s Church.  Together they had five children\, Susan Wyld\, Kathleen O’Brien\, Sharon Vest\, Maureen Pace and the late Sgt. James O’Brien.  Gerald is also survived by his favorite daughter-in-law\, Sally O’Brien and four grandchildren\, Casey and Aileen O’Brien\, and Kelly and Michael Vest. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nGerald began employment with National Grid as a meter reader.  After 42 years of service\, Gerald retired as a Supervisor in the Gas Department. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nGerald was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.  He volunteered with Community Hospice for over 20 years and he was also a long time Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Hospital.  Gerald was also a member of the Elks and the NiMo Pension Club East. \nGerald loved to read\, golf\, kayak and travel.  He loved spending his winters in Florida with his wife Barbara and Gloucester was always a special place for him and his family. \n  \n﻿﻿

Russell was born in Labasheeda County Clare\, Ireland on April 19\, 1906 to the late Patrick and Ellen (Flatley) Russell.  Patrick was one of seven children\, having four sisters\, Helen\, Nancy\, Mae and Margaret; and two brothers\, David and John. \n EDUCATION:\nPatrick attended Elementary School in Ireland. \n HISTORY:\nPatrick enlisted in the United States Army on January 15\, 1942 during World War II.  He was the proud recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.  Patrick was honorably discharged on October 5\, 1945. \n PERSONAL:\nPatrick married his wife\, Anne (Fitzgerald) Russell on June 10\, 1946 in Troy.  Together they had four children\, Mary Anne\, Patrick Jr.\, John and the late Maurice.  He is also survived by nine grandchildren\, Shannon\, Patrick\, Garth\, Michael\, James\, Geoffery\, Annie\, Jennifer and Jay; and twelve great-grandchildren. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nPatrick was employed with Vanderheyden School and Ten Eyck Hotel in Albany. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nPatrick was Chief of Vanderheyden Hall and he was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Troy and Watervliet. \nPatrick loved gardening and was a avid Yankee fan. \n  \n﻿﻿
