DESCRIPTION:HONOR-A-DECEASED-VETERAN\nAUGUST 2018 \nRONALD JOHN WELSH\n1957 – 2018 \n  \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRonald John Welsh was born on August 23\, 1957 in Albany\, New York to the late Margaret Helen Welsh (Wickham).  Ronald was the brother of Christina Baker\, Margaret “Midge” Northrup\, Joseph Welsh and the late William Welsh and Kathleen Walker. \nEDUCATION:\nRonald graduated from Savannah High School\, class of 1977.  He then attended Cadre Instructor School where he graduated top of his class.  Ronald also attended United States Army Ranger Courses. \nHISTORY:\nRonald served in the United States Army and the National Guard from 1975-1997.  He saw active duty in Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War and was a Squad Leader in Combat Military Police Operations.  Ronald was the proud recipient of many awards and medals; Good Conduct Medal\, Overseas Service Ribbon\, Army Service Ribbon\, Army Lapel Button\, Sharpshooter (Rifle M-16A1)\, 1st Class Qualification (Hand Grenade) Expert Badge\, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars\, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star.  With over 21 years of service\, Ronald was honorably discharged in 1997. \nPERSONAL:\nRonald is survived by his wife of seventeen years\, Sandra Welsh; his children\, Rondene (Ernest Cannon\, Ronald John Welsh\, Jr.\, Jeffrey (Amy) Welsh and Jason Welsh; his grandchildren\, Ernest Cannon\, IV\, Nautica Cannon\, Ryan Cannon\, Krystal Cannon\, Joshua Cannon\, Audrey Welsh\, Amelia Welsh and Owen Welsh; and one great grandchild\, Genisus Cannon.  Ronald is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his feline babies\, Nicholas\, Cricket and Ranger. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nRonald was employed with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)\, where he performed duties in Logistics to provide disaster relief all over the country.  He was also a 1983 Military Police\, 105th Patrol Supervisor in Troy\, New York. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nRonald was a member of the Lansingburgh VFW and often assisted others in group therapy sessions. \nRonald’s cats were very near and dear to him.  He enjoyed toy collecting\, traveling\, camping\, collecting sports memorabilia\, antiquing\, gardening\, playing board games and spending time with his family.

Hendrick\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nPAUL JOSEPH HENDRICK\, SR.\, 1950-2018\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nPaul Joseph Hendrick\, Sr. was born on January 26\, 1950 in Albany\, New York to the late Edward Charles Hendrick and Marjorie Antoinette (Bentz) Hendrick.  Paul was the brother of Michael Hendrick and Nancy Bellanger. \nEDUCATION:\nPaul attended Albany High School and received his High School Equivalent – GEDT from the Army. \n HISTORY:\nPaul enlisted in the United States Army on August 12\, 1968 in Albany\, New York.  He attended the United States Army Air Defense School in Fort Bliss\, Texas for AD Arty Automatic Weapons Repairman Training. Paul served in the Army G Battery\, 68th Artillery\, 15th Headquarters Detachment Group.  He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal\, Vietnam Service Medal W/5 Bronze Service Stars\, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device\, Army Commendation Medal W/”V” Device\, Army Commendation Medal (FOLC) and Good Conduct Medal- Expert- Rifle.  Paul was honorably discharged on August 11\, 1971. \n PERSONAL:\nOn August 24\, 1970\, Paul married his wife of 47 years\, Judith Lorraine (Loucks) Hendrick in First Circuit Court\, Honolulu\, Hawaii.  In addition to his wife\, Paul is survived by his children\, Lori (Shawn) Kolb and Paul (Heidi) Hendrick\, Jr.; his grandchildren\, Dylan and Ashley Kolb\, Brandon and Logan Hendrick; his sister-in-law\, Patty Hendrick; his nephew\, Michael Hendrick and his “adopted” son Donald Ramsey. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nPaul was a truck driver for Sunnyside Garage in Castleton\, New York. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nPaul enjoyed camping\, driving\, fixing lawn mowers and working at truck pulls.

Rustin\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nPAUL THEODORE RUSTIN\, 1936-2016\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nPaul Theodore Rustin was born on March 22\, 1936 in Glens Falls\, New York to the late Wilbur Rustin and Ellen Hale Rustin.  Paul was the brother of Phyllis\, Ellen\, Irvin\, Thomas and John.  The siblings that predeceased him were\, Rhoda\, Alice\, Joseph\, Theodore\, David and Carlese. \nEDUCATION:\nPaul attended Troy Schools. \n HISTORY:\nPaul enlisted in the United States Navy on April 6\, 1954.  He served aboard the USS Des Moines (CA- 134) and was the recipient of the Navy Occupation Medal.  Paul was honorable discharged on January 25\, 1957. \n PERSONAL:\nPaul married his wife\, Barbara in Troy\, New York.  He is survived by his sons; Wayne\, Paul\, Jr. and Doug; and two step-children; Karen and Jeff.  Paul is also survived by his grandchildren; Wayne and Dillon; his step-grandchildren; Lavinia and Kiera; and one great-granddaughter. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nPaul was employed in the Auto Body Industry. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nPaul enjoyed hunting\, bowling\, camping and horseshoes. \nTHEODORE HALE RUSTIN\, SR.\, 1940-2016\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nTheodore Hale Rustin\, Sr. was born on October 12\, 1940 in Glens Falls\, New York to the late Wilbur Rustin and Ellen Hale Rustin.  Ted was the brother of Irvin\, Thomas\, John\, Ellen\, Phyllis and the late Paul.  Ted was predeceased by his siblings; Rhoda\, Alice\, Joseph\, Carlese and David. \nEDUCATION:\nTed attended Troy Schools. \n HISTORY:\nTed enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves on December 12\, 1957.  He attended basic training at the Great Lakes Navy Center in Illinois and upon graduation he was assigned to shore duty at the Key West Florida Naval Station.  On December 16\, 1958\, Ted entered into Active Duty with the Navy.  On May 19\, 1960\, he reported to Mayport\, Florida\, where he was assigned to the USS Saratoga CVA -60 to O.I. Division as a Radarman.  While serving aboard the USS Saratoga CVA -60\, Ted participated in Operation Sword Thrust in coordination with our NATO Allies.  Ted was honorably discharged on November 9\, 1960. \n PERSONAL:\nOn July 11\, 1959\, Ted married his wife of fifty-six years\, Ruth Bowen Rustin.  Ted was the proud father of Ruth Ellen\, Terry and Theodore\, Jr.  Ted is also survived by his grandchildren\, Amy\, Ryan and Gwendolyn; one great granddaughter\, Alyssa; and his best friend\, Wallace A. Coffman. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nTed was employed with Behr Manning in Watervliet\, New York and later retired from his own heavy equipment business. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nTed was a legacy life member of the USS Saratoga Association. \nTed’s favorite pastime was rebuilding and painting antique\, classic\, and street rod cars.  He was the proud recipient of many trophies at car shows.  Ted loved his 1934 Ford 5 Window Coupe\, which he restored and inscribed “Built by Henry and Ted” under the hood. \nJOSEPH CHARLES RUSTIN\, SR.\, 1937-2015\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nJoseph Charles Rustin\, Sr. was born on May 29\, 1937 in Glens Falls\, New York to the late Wilbur Rustin and Ellen Hale Rustin.  Joseph was the brother of Phyllis Angell\, Ellen Hughes\, Irvin Rustin\, Thomas Rustin\, Paul Rustin\, Theodore Rustin\, John Rustin and the late Rhoda Bruce\, Alice Lebentritt\, David Rustin and Carlese Rustin. \nEDUCATION:\nJoseph attended Troy High School. \n HISTORY:\nJoseph enlisted in the United States Navy on November 10\, 1954 in Albany\, New York.  While serving in the Navy\, Joseph was an Armament Mechanic.  He was honorably discharged on May 22\, 1958. \n PERSONAL:\nJoseph was married for fifty-five years to his wife\, Martha Moore Howd Rustin.  In addition to his wife\, Joseph is survived by his children; Maryellen (Russell)\, Joseph\, Jr.\, David\, Karen and Eric\, and his five grandchildren; Kjelene\, Evan\, Adam\, Dante and Timothy. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nAfter Joseph’s honorable discharge from the Navy\, he began working at Leaseway of Eastern\, New York.  He then went on to work at Leo’s Overhead Doors and later worked at LeRoy Holding\, where he retired. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJoseph was a member of the American Legion of Cohoes and the VFW of Waterford. \nJoseph was an avid card player and he enjoyed fishing and hunting. \n

Coons was born on September 25\, 1914 in Troy\, New York to the late Earl A. Coons and Mary Louise Salisbury Coons.  Earl was the brother of two sisters\, Irma Newman and Elizabeth Mutch. \nEDUCATION:\nEarl attended Troy Public Schools. \n HISTORY:\nEarl enlisted in the United States Army during World War II on April 9\, 1943.  He entered into active service on April 16\, 1943.  Earl earned the rank of Technical Sergeant on the 1010th AAF Base Unit\, where he was an Aerial Engineer Gunner.  While serving\, Earl participated in the Rome-Arno Campaign and the Southern France Campaign.  He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal\, Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters\, Distinguished Flying Cross and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.  Earl was honorably discharged on June 1\, 1945. \n PERSONAL:\nEarl was predeceased by his first wife\, Mary F. (Gross) Coons.  In addition to his wife\, Margaret E. (Jones) Davis Coons\, Earl is survived by three sons; Earl A.\, Martin R. and John J. Coons; three daughters; Joyce Bendon\, Nancy Brammer and Sandra Nolan; a step-son; Alan Davis; two step-daughters; Linda Cardona and Susan Davis.  Earl is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nEarl was employed with General Electric\, Troy Bus Co. and United Traction Bus Co.  He was also a self-employed general contractor\, retiring in 1979. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nEarl was a member of the Troy Lodge Elks #141 and Lansingburgh Order of the Odd Fellows. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Honoring Abbott L. Wiley\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nABBOTT LANSING WILEY\, 1916-2017\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nAbbott Lansing Wiley was born on December 18\, 1916 in Pittstown\, New York to the late Leonard J. and Alice (Sherman) Wiley.  Abbott was predeceased by three brothers and a sister\, Newton\, Charles\, Harold and Ellen. \nEDUCATION:\nAbbott attended Tomhannock Little Red School House and was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School.  He also attended the SUNY College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill for one year until his enlistment into the United States Army. \n HISTORY:\nAbbott enlisted in the United States Army on October 1\, 1942 in Albany\, NY.  After basic training he attended Officer Candidate School\, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and sent to North Africa and Italy as part of the Fifth Army.  Abbott was promoted to the rank of Captain and Battery Commander of the 347th Field Artillery Battalion of the 91st Infantry Division.  He saw combat during “Operation Italia” in nine Italian cities and surrounding areas.  Abbott was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Battle Stars\, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.  When Abbott was honorably discharged on February 6\, 1946\, he earned the rank of Major and received a Bronze Star for “Valor in combat while under enemy fire.” \n PERSONAL:\nOn October 20\, 1945\, Abbott married Ruth (Olney) Wiley in Watervliet\, New York.  Together they had three children\, Lynn (Dennis) Latham\, Carol Irvine and William (Sharon) Wiley.  Abbott is also survived by seven grandchildren\, Mark Schaefer\, Jennifer Schaefer\, William (Melissa) Irvine\, Andrew Irvine\, Melanie (Kevin) Lemmer\, Marina Wiley and Bryan Wiley\, and four great-grandchildren\, Johan Lemmer\, Mia Puglese\, Alexander and Madeline Irvine\, as well as several nieces and nephews. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nAbbott and his brother purchased a local business in Valley Falls and established Wiley Brothers Inc.\, a family run lumber and home hardware supply company.  In 2002\, Abbott retired from his business as the President. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nAbbott was active in local Republican politics\, serving as the Town of Pittstown Supervisor\, the Chairman of the Rensselaer County Legislature\, Majority Office and a trustee of Hudson Valley Community College.  He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Valley Falls Fire Company.  He was a member of the Powamppokonk Rod and Gun Club in Pittstown. \nAbbott was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting\, fishing\, trap and skeet shooting and wood working.  He also enjoyed photography and reading history books. \n  \n

Ryan was born on August 19\, 1924 in Troy\, New York to the late Patrick and Rose Newell Ryan.  Thomas was the brother of Patricia Douglas and the late David Ryan. \nEDUCATION:\nThomas attended Catholic Grade School in Brooklyn until 1933 and then moved to Rensselaer\, where he attended St. John’s Academy and completed grade 5.  He then attended St. Michael’s in Troy and graduated from 8th grade in 1938.  Thomas attended Catholic Central High School for 2 years but then had to quit to work and help support his family. \n HISTORY:\nThomas enlisted in the United States Navy on March 12\, 1943 in Albany\, NY.  He was a Seaman First Class serving aboard the USS Lindsey DM 32 during World War II.  Thomas was 1 of 331 men serving aboard the ship when it was attacked by suicide planes from Japan in Okinawa\, leaving 114 crewmen either injured or dead.  Prior to serving aboard the USS Lindsey DM 32\, Thomas served on transport and supply ships\, carrying men and equipment for the Pacific invasions.  Thomas was the recipient of the American Theatre Medal\, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal.  Thomas P. Ryan was honorably discharged on February 19\, 1946. \n PERSONAL:\nThomas married his beloved wife\, the late Dorothy M. Chamberlain on October 12\, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church in Green Island\, NY.  Together they had two daughters; Linda Reynolds and Sharon Ryan.  Thomas is also survived by his granddaughters; Tiffany (Jeff) Gibson and Kelly (Martin) O’Neill\, and his great grandchildren; Anthony\, Jeffrey\, Abby and Shannon\, as well as several nieces and nephews. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nAs a child\, Thomas helped deliver milk before school.  After the war he worked at Behr-Manning (Norton Company) in Watervliet\, NY in the abrasives shipping department for 40 years. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nThomas was a member of the Tin Can Sailors National Association. \nThomas loved traveling with his wife to different locations across the country for reunions with survivors of the USS Lindsey DM 32.  He also enjoyed gardening\, talking with friends and taking walks with his K9 companions. \n  \n

OPITZ\, 1947-2007\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nDavid B. Opitz was born on September 12\, 1947 in Troy\, New York to the late Lupita Berrigan Opitz and Stanley J. Opitz.  David was the brother of Donna\, John\, Tim and the late Stanley. \nEDUCATION:\nDavid attended St. Joseph’s School\, and then Lasalle\, finishing his high school education at Troy High School\, class of 1965. \n  HISTORY:\nDavid enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves on May 28\, 1967.  He was ordered to active duty on December 1\, 1967.  He was assigned to the USS Warrington (DD 843)\, where he was a Boatwain’s Mate.  David was the recipient of the National Defense Medal.  He was honorably discharged on August 21\, 1972. \n PERSONAL:\nDavid married Barbara Fitzgerald Opitz and together they had two children; Shannon and Michael.  David was also survived by his two four-legged canine friends; Blu and Grey; and several nieces and nephews. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nDavid worked as an Engineer for Verizon\, retiring in 2002. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nDavid was a member of the American Legion Post in Wynantskill\, New York and the Polish American Club.  He was also a Little League Coach. \nDavid loved reading\, wood working and spending time with his family. \n  \n

Pratt\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nEDWARD LEONARD PRATT\, 1923-2004\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nEdward Leonard Pratt was born in Chicago\, Illinois on October 18\, 1923 to the late Edward L. Pratt and Mary Catherine Gallagher.  Edward was the brother of William Pratt and he was predeceased by his sister\, Catherine Donnelly. \nEDUCATION:\nEdward was a graduate of St. John’s Academy\, class of 1941.  After the service\, Edward attended Siena College where he was a graduate\, class of 1956. \n HISTORY:\nEdward enlisted in the United States Army on August 26\, 1943 in Albany\, New York.  While serving as a Technician Fifth Grade\, Medical Department\, Medical Detachment in the 254th Infantry Regiment\, Edward received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for such “magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire”\, during the attack on the Siegfried Line.  Edward was also the proud recipient of the American Service Medal\, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal\, Good Conduct Medal\, Presidential Unit Citation and the World War II Victory Medal.  Edward was honorably discharged from the 142nd Infantry Regiment\, 36th Infantry Division as Sergeant on December 22\, 1945. \n PERSONAL:\nEdward married Lillian Elizabeth Spath on March 6\, 1943 at St. John’s Church in Rensselaer\, New York.  Edward is survived by two children\, Edward Pratt and Rosemary Crawford\, and four grandchildren\, Frank Costa\, Nick Costa\, Doreen Stewart and E6 Edward Costa\, United States Coast Guard.  He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law\, Jack and Mary Spath. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nEdward began his career in chemistry with Sterling Drug\, where he worked as a lab boy at Sterling Winthrop in the early 1940s.  After the war\, Edward returned to Sterling Drug and moved to the Analytical Chemistry Department at the Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in 1965.  In 1986\, Ed retired as the Director of Analytical Chemistry. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nEdward was a lifelong active parishioner in his church\, where he was a Eucharistic Minister\, lector and trustee.  He was on the board of the US Pharmacopeia for 12 years and an emeritus member of Sigma XI.  Edward was also active with the Knights of Columbus\, Council 267. \nEdward enjoyed golfing\, reading and research.  He was also very active in his children’s activities. \n  \n

Wade\, Florence Wade Filippone and Patricia Wade Bizarro. \nEDUCATION:\nWilliam attended St. Michael’s School and was a Troy High Graduate\, class of 1940. \n HISTORY:\nWilliam enlisted in the United States Navy on December 8\, 1942.  He was a Radioman Second Class and he served aboard the Navy Submarine Chaser USS SC-1319.  William was the proud recipient of the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars\, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 3 stars\, American Theater Ribbon\, Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.  William was honorably discharged on January 6\, 1946. \n PERSONAL:\nOn November 25\, 1945\, William married Bernice D. Walsh in St. Francis Church in Troy\, New York.  Together they had two children\, Thomas W. Wade and Edward J. Wade and five grandchildren\, Sheila Wade Duffy\, Kristin Wade\, William P. Wade. II\, Matthew Wade and Timothy Wade. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nWilliam worked for the New York Telephone Co.\, he was the Rensselaer County Commissioner of Social Services from 1965-1967 and he was the Rensselaer County Clerk from January 1\, 1970 until August 4\, 1970\, when he passed away.  William was also the Proprietor of Wade’s Wine Shop. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nWilliam was a member of the American Legion\, St. Mary’s Bowling League and Holy Name Society.  He was also the East Greenbush Democratic Chairman and a member of the Rensselaer County Democratic Committee. \nWilliam had a love for fishing and youth baseball. \n  \n  \n

(Edie) Cook\, Sr. and the late Elton G. Cook\, Jr.  Elton is also survived by his grandchildren\, Nicholas J. Cook\, Jr.\, Amanda L. Cook and Zachary M. Cook\, as well as many nieces and nephews. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nElton was an ambulance driver for the former Leonard Hospital in Troy for 42 years. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nElton was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7466 in Poestenkill. He was a former member of the Cpl. Paul J. Baker Post VFW in Lansingburgh and Phoenix Lodge #58 F & AM in Lansingburgh.  Elton also served as captain of the Knickerbocker Steamer Co. #1 in Waterford from 1928-1935. \nElton had a love for fishing\, walking and listening to ambulance calls. \n  \n

O’Brien was born in Troy\, New York on May 24\, 1934.  He was the son of Joseph O’ Brien and Margaret (Hickey) O’Brien. \n EDUCATION:\nGerald attended St. Augustine School and Catholic Central High School.  After high school he attended Hudson Valley Community College. \n HISTORY:\nGerald enlisted in the United States Navy on September 8\, 1953 in Bainbridge\, Maryland.  He trained as a Seabee in Port Hueneme\, California and was stationed on the US Naval Base Trinidad.  Gerald was the proud recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.  He was honorably discharged on August 9\, 1955 \n PERSONAL:\nOn September 14\, 1957\, Gerald married his wife Barbara (Kelly) O’Brien in St. Joseph’s Church.  Together they had five children\, Susan Wyld\, Kathleen O’Brien\, Sharon Vest\, Maureen Pace and the late Sgt. James O’Brien.  Gerald is also survived by his favorite daughter-in-law\, Sally O’Brien and four grandchildren\, Casey and Aileen O’Brien\, and Kelly and Michael Vest. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nGerald began employment with National Grid as a meter reader.  After 42 years of service\, Gerald retired as a Supervisor in the Gas Department. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nGerald was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.  He volunteered with Community Hospice for over 20 years and he was also a long time Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Hospital.  Gerald was also a member of the Elks and the NiMo Pension Club East. \nGerald loved to read\, golf\, kayak and travel.  He loved spending his winters in Florida with his wife Barbara and Gloucester was always a special place for him and his family. \n  \n
