SUMMARY:November 2023 Honor A Deceased Veteran - Richard L. Butterfield
DESCRIPTION:Richard L. Butterfield\n1945-2022 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRichard “Rick” L. Butterfield was born on April 25\, 1945 in Mansfield\, Ohio. He was the son of Richard and Shirley (Larkin) Butterfield\, and the brother of Sharon and Rodney. \nEDUCATION:\nAs a child\, Rick’s family moved to Averill Park\, New York where he attended Averill Park High School\, and then went on to attend The State University of New York where he received his bachelor’s degree. \nHISTORY:\nOn September 30\, 1963\, Rick enlisted in the United States Army in Albany\, New York. He was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning\, Georgia in March 1965 and sent to Vietnam as a Pathfinder Team Leader\, 11th Pathfinders 1st Cav. Division. He saw combat in the battles at LZ X-Ray\, LZ Columbus and LZ Albany-Ia Drang Valley\, where he and his team directed helicopter resupply and medical evacuation and rescue missions. It was here that he was wounded and did not leave his team until all other wounded soldiers were removed from the battlefield. Rick served his second tour in Vietnam in 1968 as Captain and company commander of E Company\, 2nd Battalion\, 506 Infantry\, 101st Airborne. His company conducted many combat operations. After recovering from injuries at Camp Zama\, Japan he returned to Vietnam and served as Team Commander with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Green Berets assigned to MACV-SOG. Missions from his unit were classified. \nOn February 10\, 1970\, Rick was honorably discharged from the United States Army. For his honorable service\, he was awarded many personal awards which include the Legion of Merit\, Purple Heart\, Meritorious Service Medal\, Air Medal\, Army Commendation Medal\, Vietnam Service Medal\, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal\, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (6th Award)\, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2nd Award)\, Army Service Ribbon\, Parachute Badge\, National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award)\, Army Good Conduct Medal\, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award)\, Combat Infantryman Badge\, Master Parachutist Badge\, Special Forces Tab\, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms\, and Vietnam Special Forces Jump Wings. After serving on active duty\, Rick served in the New York Army National Guard as a company commander\, Battalion Commander 2nd of the 105th Infantry\, and as a Commander of the 1st Brigade\, 42nd Infantry Division. Rick was breveted to the rank of Brigadier General upon his retirement in 1995. \n PERSONAL:\nOn July 27\, 2020\, Rick married his wife\, Cathy (Bullis) in Flagler County\, Florida. He has three loving children: Lori\, Hayden and the late Eric; and seven grandchildren: Emma\, Robert\, Grace\, Kasha\, Zoe\, Hayden and Roan. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nAfter his years of service\, Rick spent 35 years the New York State Police\, serving from 1970 to 2006. There he received certification at the Canine Handlers Basic School with his K-9 partner Frey who was trained in explosives detection. Rick moved into undercover work as an investigator with CNET and the BCI\, and also spent time as a Firearms Instructor\, Rifle Sharpshooter\, member of the Underwater Recovery Team and was the Police Benevolent Association Delegate\, Troop G. After retiring from the NYS Police\, Rick joined the Warren County Sheriff’s Office as Marine Patrol on Lake George and then was cross designated to go back undercover to work on a Task Force with NYS Police CNET where he again received commendation for his undercover work. Rick was awarded the NYS Conspicuous Service Medal\, the NYS Military Commendation Medal\, the NYS Aid to Civil Authorities Medal (2nd Award)\, the Long and Faithful Service Award (25 years)\, and was the third recipient of the Rev. Francis A. Kelley Home Town Hero Award in 2016. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nRick was the Commodore (1997) and a lifetime member of the Castleton Boat Club\, lifetime member of the Nassau Sportsmen’s Club\, past board member of Lebanon Valley Speedway and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Troy. He was a member of the Renegade Pigs Motorcycle Club and enjoyed their annual Christmas visit to St. Margaret’s Center wearing his Santa hat. \nRick loved to work on and drive cars and motorcycles\, and enjoyed riding his Harley cross country. He was the son of Robert and June (Seguin) Santspree\, and the brother of Roberta\, Donald\, Robert\, Cynthia\, Michael and the late Paula. \nEDUCATION:\nRichard grew up in Cohoes\, New York and received his education through the Cohoes City School District.  \nHISTORY:\nOn October 30\, 1967\, Richard enlisted in the United States Army in Albany\, New York and served during the Vietnam War. He completed and received his GED in 1970 while serving. Richard was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist Fourth Class on October 21\, 1970. For his honorable service\, he received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal\, National Defense Service Medal\, the Expert M16 and Sharpshooter M14. \nPERSONAL:\nOn April 3\, 1971\, Richard married his wife\, Christine (Hogan) at St. Rita’s Church in Cohoes\, New York. Together they had three loving children: Kimberly\, Richard and Thomas; four grandchildren: Kyle\, Kayeleigh\, Violet and Brayden; and several nieces and nephews. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nRichard worked for GE in Schenectady\, New York as a machinist for 40 years until he retired on August 1\, 2010. \n  \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nRichard was an active member of the community and loved spending time with his family\, especially during the holidays and traveling for family vacations. He was a member of the Cohoes Rod & Gun Club\, American Legion Ruane Post 476\, Cohoes Moose Club and the Cohoes-Waterford Elks Lodge #1317. For many years\, Richard volunteered at the St. Rita’s Church annual bazaar and the Cohoes Rod & Gun Club’s annual kids fishing contest at Van Schaick Island Pond. DESCRIPTION:HONOR-A-DECEASED-VETERAN\nSeptember 2023\nJohn Edward Dingman\n1932-2003 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nJohn E. Dingman was born on September 2\, 1950 in Chatham\, New York. He was the son of Francis and Mildred (Tiffany) Dingman. He was the brother of Shirley\, Charles\, Lydia\, Eleanor and Frank. \nEDUCATION:\nJohn was a graduate of Maple High School\, before going on to serve his country. \nHISTORY:\nOn August 28\, 1969\, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Albany\, New York and served during the Vietnam War. He served as a special radio operator with the Electronic Warfare Company\, 2nd Radio Battalion\, where he received extensive training\, including a 47-week Burmese Language Course\, and a 20-week Radio Communication Technology Course. John was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on August 27\, 1973. For his honorable service\, John received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. \nPERSONAL:\nOn October 8\, 1983\, John married his wife\, Linda (Jewett) at the Castleton Fire House. Together they had three loving children: Beth\, Jason and Melanie; grandchildren: Justin\, Jordan\, Abby\, Alexa and Aliana; and great-grandchild Caynon. He resided in Nassau\, New York with his loving family. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJohn was employed by GE Plastics in Selkirk for 40 years before he retired. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJohn was a big family man and loved spending time with his grandchildren. In his free time\, he loved to go fishing\, camping and hunting\, and his favorite getaway at the Adirondack Gateway RV Resort. John also taught bow hunting and rifle courses as a hunting education and safety instructor. DESCRIPTION:HONOR-A-DECEASED-VETERAN\nAUGUST 2023\nDONALD A. SHIELDS\n1932-2003 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nDonald A. Shields was born on October 4\, 1932 in Harpersfield\, New York. He was the son of Theodore and Marion (Persons) Shields\, and had one sister\, Marie\, and one brother\, Clinton. \nEDUCATION:\nDonald received his education through the Sidney Central School District and lived with his parents in Harpersfield\, New York. \nHISTORY:\nOn September 7\, 1951\, Donald enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Albany\, New York. He served with the 7th Marines\, 1st Marine Division as an infantryman in Korea. During a battle on October 4\, 1952\, Donald was wounded in action. After he recovered\, Donald returned to the front lines\, and on February 13\, 1953 was once again wounded in action. \nOn September 6\, 1954\, Donald was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Corporal. For his honorable service\, Donald was awarded the Purple Heart Medal with one Gold Star\, the Good Conduct Medal\, the Korean Service Medal with three Service Stars\, the United Nations Service Medal\, the National Defense Service Medal\, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. \nPERSONAL:\nOn April 12\, 1953\, Donald married his wife\, Jacquelin (Logan) in Sidney\, New York. Together they had four loving children: Gary\, Sharon\, Patricia and Penny. They went on to relocate to Castleton\, New York\, where they raised their family. Their family eventually expanded to include 6 grandchildren: Michael\, Christie\, Christopher\, Kelly\, Chantel and Ian. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nBefore his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps\, Donald worked as a farmhand on a dairy farm in Unadilla\, New York. After his service\, Donald went back to working as a farmhand\, until he began his career as a truck driver with Mobil Oil Co.\, so that he could support his family. He retired from there after 33 years of employment. Donald also worked as a building inspector for the Town of Schodack for over 16 years\, and served on the town’s planning and zoning boards. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nDonald was a member of the Peter Andrews Memorial VFW post in Castleton\, a member of the Exxon/Mobil retirees club of Albany\, a communicant of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and a past Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed spending time with his loving family and friends\, especially traveling and camping in his free time. Parrow\, Sr. was born on October 3\, 1954 in Troy\, New York to James and Lois (Evans) Parrow\, Sr.\, and was the brother of James\, Jr. \nEDUCATION:\nMichael resided in Troy\, New York with his family and attended Sacred Heart School\, Troy Public School 16 and later graduated from LaSalle Institute in 1973. \nHISTORY:\nOn June 30\, 1973\, Michael enlisted in the United States Army in Albany\, New York. He received his basic training\, and then went on to attend Military Police School before being assigned to United States Army Europe and Africa as an MP with the 529th MP Co HQ. Michael was honorably discharged from the United States Army with the rank of Specialist Fourth Class on June 23\, 1976 at Fort Dix\, New Jersey. For his service\, Michael was awarded the National Defense Service Medal\, the Good Conduct Medal\, the Expert Marksman Badge with Grenade Bar\, the Marksman Badge with .45 Cal Bar and Pistol Bar and the Sharpshooter Badge with M-16 Bar. \nPERSONAL:\nOn October 6\, 1979\, Michael married his wife\, Susan Carpentier at St. Bonaventure Church in Speigletown\, New York. Together they had three loving children: Michael\, Jr.\, Joshua and Alison\, and grandchildren: Remi and Maddox. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nMichael began his civilian career in law enforcement when he joined the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department after returning to civilian life. After seven proud years with the Sheriff’s Department\, Michael began his employment with the Troy Police Department in 1983. Throughout his career\, Michael served as everything from a patrolman to evidence technician. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2003 and assigned to the Detective Bureau in 2005\, where he spent the remainder of his career until his retirement in 2018. Some of his many accomplishments with the Troy Police Department include the Silver Shield and the John J. Givney “Officer of the Year” award. \nIn addition to working for the Police Department\, Michael also served as the Rensselaer County Health Department’s medicolegal death investigator from January 7\, 2002 until his passing. Michael was a pillar of the County’s Medical Examiner’s Office program and a founding father of the way the program functions today. \n  \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nMichael was always an active member of his community and making a difference on people’s lives. In his spare time\, he loved assisting in local youth sports\, whether it was  Lansingburgh Little League or Pop Warner Football\, he was there coaching\, running chains\, administering or simply providing rides to and from practice. DESCRIPTION:Proclamation Honoring the Plunkett Family \nWHEREAS\,         Rensselaer County owes a great debt to the men and women of our loyal Armed Forces who so bravely fought to preserve our American heritage; and \nWHEREAS\,         We must never forget our veterans whose determined spirit led us to victory and gave us freedom\, peace and unity; and \nWHEREAS\,         It is consistent with the duty of this Legislative Body to recognize the contributions of the citizens of our county and on behalf of the residents of Rensselaer County\, we remember with deepest respect and admiration the life and career of George F. Plunkett\, Jr.\, John J. Plunkett\, Charles W. Plunkett\, Sr.\, James E. Plunkett\, Thomas J. Plunkett\, William P. Plunkett\, Sr. and Elizabeth A. Plunkett who unselfishly served their Country in various branches of the United States military; and \nWHEREAS\,         George F. Plunkett\, Jr. served his country in the United States Army from May 3\, 1946 until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on September 23\, 1947. For his service\, George was awarded the WWII Victory Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button; and \nWHEREAS\,         John J. Plunkett served his country in the United States Army from November 21\, 1950 until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on November 14\, 1952. For his service\, John was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp; and \nWHEREAS\,         Charles W. Plunkett\, Sr. served his country in the United States Marine Corps from April 18\, 1951 until he was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on April 17\, 1954. For his service\, Charles was awarded the Korean Service Medal\, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal; and \nWHEREAS\,         James E. Plunkett served his country in the United States Army from January 7\, 1954 until he was honorably discharged as a Specialist Third Class on January 6\, 1956. For his service\, James was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal; and \nWHEREAS\,         Thomas J. Plunkett served his country in the United States Army from January 27\, 1958 until he was honorably retired as a Sergeant First Class on February 28\, 1981. For his service\, Thomas was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal\, the National Defense Service Medal\, the Vietnam Campaign Medal\, the Army Commendation Medal\, Overseas Bars (2)\, Good Conduct Medal (5th Award) and the Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge with Rifle Bar; and \nWHEREAS\,         William P. Plunkett\, Sr. served his country in the United States Navy from May 5\, 1954 until he was honorably discharged as a Seaman on April 24\, 1958. For his service\, William was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; and \nWHEREAS\,         Elizabeth A. Plunkett served her country in the United States Marine Corps from October 23\, 1958 until she was honorably retired as a Master Sergeant on April 30\, 1981. For her service\, Elizabeth was awarded the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award)\, the National Defense Service Medal\, the Navy Commendation Medal\, the Meritorious Unit Commendation\, the Marksman Pistol Badge and a Certificate of Commendation (3rd Award); now\, therefore\, be it \nPROCLAIMED\,  That this Legislative Body does hereby acknowledge the life of George F. He was the brother of Jenny\, Eva\, Irene\, Herbert and Eugene. \nEDUCATION:\nJohn resided in Troy\, New York with his family and received his education through the Troy Public School system. \nHISTORY:\nOn May 22\, 1940\, John enlisted in the United States Army in Albany\, New York. He was assigned to the 36th Infantry Division as a rifleman\, and participated in many battles in the Mediterranean and European Theater Campaigns. John was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on August 28\, 1945 from the United States Army at Fort Dix\, New Jersey. He was the brother of William Vogt who served in the U.S. Air Force. \nEDUCATION:\nRobert was born\, raised and lived in Troy\, New York for most of his life\, and attended Catholic Central High School\, Lansingburgh High School and LaSalle Institute. \nHISTORY:\nOn August 4\, 1953\, Robert enlisted into the United States Marine Corps in Albany\, New York\, and then headed to the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot\, Parris Island\, South Carolina where he received his basic training. After completing basic training\, Robert attended Airman School (Class P) at Marine Air Detachment\, Jacksonville\, Florida\, and then went on to receive his flight equipment course at the Naval Air Technical Training Unit in Lakehurst\, New Jersey. From there\, Robert went on to serve as a Basic Flight Equipmentman. Robert was honorably discharged with the rank of Private on November 15\, 1956 from the United States Marine Corps\, and for his service\, he received the National Defense Service Medal. \nPERSONAL:\nOn April 6\, 1958\, Robert married his wife Ann Cassino at St. Peter’s Church in Troy\, New York. Together they had four loving children: Robert\, Timothy\, Gary (deceased) and Patricia\, and 14 grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nRobert worked for many years at Bendix Corp. in Green Island\, New York as a machine operator in the friction materials division until he had to retire in 1985. He continued to work at HUDMO Valley Federal Credit Union\, where he previously served as President\, a member of the Board of Directors and later as Chairman of the Supervisory Committee\, a position that he held until his passing. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nHe was a retired member of the United Auto Workers Local #1508\, where he served for several years as the Recording Secretary\, a long-time member of the Friends of 112th Street and the American Legion Post #927 in Green Island\, a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church\, and a former Boy Scouts of America Leader for Pack 58. He was the brother of Elizabeth\, Marcella\, Grace\, Loretta\, Agnes\, Florence\, William and John. \nEDUCATION:\nHenry was born and raised in Troy\, New York and attended schools in the Troy Public School System before deciding to enlist. \nHISTORY:\nHenry was a World War I and World War II Veteran and enlisted in the New York Army National Guard at the age of eighteen\, and served with Support Company\, 2nd Infantry Division. On December 30\, 1919\, he enlisted in the United States Navy in Albany\, New York. Henry served aboard the USS Eagle\, the USS Sacramento\, the USS Patonka and the USS Denebola. On January 6\, 1928\, Henry was honorably discharged. \nOn January 3\, 1944\, Henry decided to enlist again into the United States Naval Reserve in Boston\, Massachusetts. After he was placed on active duty\, Henry was assigned to the USS Mount Olympus\, and on June 9\, 1946\, he was again honorably discharged from the United States Navy. For his brave service\, Henry was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. \nPERSONAL:\nHenry married his wife\, Mabel Francis Linehan in 1927 in Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, and together they had children: William\, Joseph\, Frank and Paul. Sadly in 1948\, Mabel passed away. On January 8\, 1949\, Henry married Julia Raleigh in Troy\, New York and together they had a son\, Henry. \nServing in the military runs in the family. While Henry was serving his country during World War II\, his son\, William\, was also serving in the U.S. Army. Eventually\, his other sons also went on to serve along with several of his grandsons. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nHenry was a hardworking man who worked various jobs throughout his life to make sure that his family was always taken care of. He worked for A. Lavelle Construction Company as an iron worker\, J.P. Squires Company where he worked as a smoker/cooker at the meat packing and processing facility\, Bethlehem Steel Company where he worked as a machinist and operator\, and built combat vessels for the Navy\, and Ludlow Valve Company where he was the chief engineer at the time of his sudden passing. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nHenry was a proud member of the Trojan Post VFW\, the Emerald Club and the National Association of Power Engineers. During his free time\, he enjoyed the outdoors\, especially the water\, coaching kids and attending veteran functions. \nSadly\, on June 27\, 1950 Henry passed away after becoming ill while umpiring a baseball game at Geer Field. \n  \n

Miller\n1945-2022 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRobert E. “Bob” Miller was born on July 15\, 1945 in Mooers\, New York to the late Robert and Clare (Hiermeier) Miller and was 1 of 15 children. \nEDUCATION:\nBob attended Ellenburg schools from 1950-1961 before deciding to enlist in the Army. \nHISTORY:\nOn December 30\, 1963\, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper. For his service\, he received the National Defense Service Medal\, and on April 12\, 1968 Bob was honorably discharged from the Army. \nPERSONAL:\nBob lived in and married his first wife\, Anna Elmore\, in London in 1967 and together they had a daughter Lucy. Bob moved to Troy\, New York in 1971\, and in 1977 he married his second wife\, Lorraine Grzyboski. Together they had children: Shannon\, Melissa\, Kelly\, Shelly\, Shawn and Kimberly who sadly passed away as an infant. He was a loving grandfather to 17 grandchildren and left behind his most loyal companion\, his dog Lily. Bob married his third wife\, Linda Hastings\, on April 15\, 2008 in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nBob and his second wife\, Lorraine were very active in the boxing world and together opened the Uncle Sam Boxing Club\, where they began their career in boxing. Bob ran his club out of its original location in Troy for 25 years. He was a trainer and a cut man\, and Lorraine was the promoter. They ran hundreds of amateur boxing shows locally and then began running professional shows as well. They even ran shows for Mike Tyson at the beginning of his career. After retiring from Shaker High School in 2002 after 25 years\, Bob moved back to Altona\, New York with his third wife\, Linda and built his house and boxing gym there. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nBob was very well known in the community and his boxing club helped thousands of youth and adults throughout the years\, he even offered free boxing classes for kids. Bob committed all of his life to advancing the sport of boxing and influenced many to make choices that led to a better life. He even had extra rooms at his boxing club that he let people who didn’t have much stay at for free or next to nothing. He was inducted into the NYS Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015 and was a proud member of the VFW. \nBob was still very active in the boxing world\, traveling all over the world as a cut man for fighters until his car accident on October 15\, 2016. Sadly\, Bob was left paralyzed from the chest down\, however\, he did not let this stop him from living his life to the fullest. He continued to do small boxing shows\, traveling to events and his grandkid’s games. Bob was always active in his family’s lives and was a loving\, funny\, amazing father and rarely ever missed his children’s sporting events or activities. He enjoyed hunting\, fishing\, the peacefulness of country living\, had a great sense of humor and was an avid sports fan who loved the Jets and Mets. French\n1930-2020 \n  \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nDale R. “Dick” French was born on February 17\, 1930 in Lukin Township\, Illinois to the late Hillis and Gladys French. He was the brother of Wilbur\, Carl\, Bob\, Jeanne and Wilma. \nEDUCATION:\nDick’s family moved to Loudonville\, New York in 1932\, and in 1947 he graduated from Milne High School. \nHISTORY:\nDick was drafted into the United States Army in 1951\, and on February 6\, 1951 he reported for duty. He served one year in Korea and was assigned to a medical unit with the rank of Corporal. For his service\, Dick received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars\, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Dick was discharged from the Army on January 22\, 1953. \nPERSONAL:\nOn January 27\, 1951\, Dick married his wife Carol Mae Riggs in Hudson\, New York\, and together they have two children: Richard and Dana. Sadly\, Carol passed away in 1991. On May 20\, 1994 Dick got remarried to Margaret Hanson VanDeusen\, and became a stepfather to Lori and Lisa. He was a loving grandfather to Zac\, Sarah\, Courtney and Erin\, and step grandfather to Nicholas\, Olivia and Jeffrey\, along with many great-grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nDick worked in many different fields of work throughout his life. As a young man\, Dick started out being employed by Myers Department Store for several years\, and then went on to work at a shoe store in Troy\, New York. In 1954\, Dick bought a dairy farm with his father in Melrose\, New York. It was a running dairy farm until 1982 when he sold the dairy herd and continued running it as a beef and grain farm until it was sold in 1999. Dick was a part-time school bus driver for the Hoosic Valley Central School District from 1955-1982\, and then went on to work for the Town of Schaghticoke Highway Department until 1987 when he retired to be a caretaker for his wife\, Carol. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nDick was highly active in politics and served as a councilman on the Schaghticoke Town Board for 4 years before moving to Nassau\, New York\, where he served as a trustee on the Nassau Village Board for 16 years. He was Director of the Schaghticoke Fair for over 50 years and was President for 5 years. Dick was a lifelong member of the Chandler Young VFW Post 8162 in Nassau. DESCRIPTION:HONOR-A-DECEASED-VETERAN\nAUGUST 2022 \n \nSamuel Abate\n1921-2008 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nSamuel Abate was born on January 8\, 1921 in San Martino\, Italy to the late Michele and Anna Simeione Abate. He was the brother of Anthony\, Domenico and Carlo. \nEDUCATION:\nSam immigrated to the United States from Italy in 1933 and resided in Troy\, New York the rest of his life. He was a graduate of Troy High School. \nHISTORY:\nOn August 5\, 1942\, Sam enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He was sent to the Great Lakes Training Command for “boot camp”\, and upon graduation from there he received orders to the Navy’s Aviation Metalsmith School in Norman\, Oklahoma. Sam was then assigned to Fleet Air wing 17\, HedRon aboard the USS Tangier\, a seaplane tender. \nWhile aboard the Tangier\, Sam repaired the Navy’s tough PBY Catalina seaplanes of “Black Cat Warrior” fame\, and flew reconnaissance patrols aboard these aircrafts as an observer. Sam’s last duty station was Naval Air Station\, North Island\, San Diego from where he was honorably discharged on October 4\, 1945. \nPERSONAL:\nOn April 1\, 1945\, Sam married his wife Concetta Pisanello Abate. Together they have three loving children: Michael\, Anthony and Anne; grandchildren: David\, Anthony\, Stephen\, Daniel and Rachel; and great-grandchildren: Lucas\, Cristian and Maria\, Colin and Jocelyn. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nSam was employed as a metal worker for Local #83 in Albany\, New York for 40 years\, until his retirement in 1967. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nDuring his free time\, Same enjoyed spending time with his family\, gardening\, reading\, and playing golf. Sam was very active with the Sheet Metal Workers Union #83\, with which he served in many different capacities. He was instrumental with their apprentice vocational schools in both Troy and Albany. \nSadly\, on March 29\, 2008 Sam passed away. \n

For his service\, Robert was awarded the American Theatre Medal\, Victory Medal\, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 6 stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 star. Robert separated from the Navy on February 27\, 1946. \nPERSONAL:\nOn June 5\, 1943\, Robert married Shirley Dissosway Smith. Together had five loving children: Robert\, James\, Ann\, Donald and Pamela\, and grandchildren; Daniel\, Robert\, Erin\, Chad\, Jared\, Victoria\, Richard\, Benjamin\, Erica\, Sarah\, Ellen and Andrea. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nRobert retired from Schaefer Brewing Company in Albany\, New York where he was a truck driver\, and worked 8 years as a machine repairman for Troy-Bilt. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nDuring his free time\, Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing. For his service\, he was awarded the United Nations Service Medal\, National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. Joseph separated from the United States Army on October 23\, 1953. \nPERSONAL:\nOn August 26\, 1956\, Joseph married his wife of 63 years\, Helen Gildea Mancuso\, in Troy. Together they co-owned the Boradaile Restaurant in Troy and bred Newfoundland dogs under the Boradaile Kennel prefix. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJoseph worked for many years as a self-employed accountant. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJoseph enjoyed singing\, horse racing and watching basketball\, and was a member of the Elks Lodge and the VFW. \nSadly\, on February 14\, 2020 Joseph passed away. \n

DESCRIPTION:MARCH 2022 \nHENRY E. LEAVITT\n1921-2018 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nHenry “Pat” E. Leavitt was born on March 30\, 1921 in Montpelier\, Vermont to the late Henry and Lily Leavitt. He was the brother of Joseph Leavitt\, Catherine Atchinson and Isabella Swartz. \nEDUCATION:\nPat grew up and lived in East Greenbush\, New York\, until he later moved to Saratoga Springs\, New York. He attended Philip Schuyler High School\, Carnegie Institute of Technology for Civil Engineering and Stout Institute for Industrial Arts. \nHISTORY:\nPat was drafted into the United States Army\, and was set to report to Camp Upton in New York on November 11\, 1942. He was a member of the 20th Armored Division\, U.S. 7th Army\, B Company\, 220th Engineer Battalion\, which was one of three Divisions to liberate the Dachau Concentration Camp during the Battle of Munich in 1995. \nFor his service\, Pat was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal\, Good Conduct Medal\, American Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal\, and on November 24\, 1945\, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army at Camp Cooke in California. \nPERSONAL:\nPat married his loving wife\, Irma Kemmy Leavitt\, on January 16\, 1943 at Camp Gruber in Oklahoma. They were married for 74 years\, until sadly Irma passed in 2015. Together they have children: Judy\, John\, Sally and Susan; grandchildren: Pat\, Matt\, Joe\, Heather\, Brooke\, Damian and April\, and 9 great-grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nPat worked for many years for New York Telephone\, later Verizon in Albany\, as a lineman\, installer and a test board technician. Prior to that\, he had been dairy farmer. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nAlways kind and giving\, Pat was an avid gardener and loved sharing his good fortune with family and friends. \nSadly\, on November 25\, 2018 Pat passed away. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:JOSEPH M. SPAIRANA\, SR.\n1917-2005 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nJoseph M. Spairana\, Sr. was born on August 17\, 1917 in Troy\, New York to the late John J. and Mary Ann Carnevale Spairana. He was the brother of Michael\, Rita and John. \nEDUCATION:\nJoseph graduated from Catholic Central High School and the Veterans Vocational School (now HVCC)\, and later went on to attend Russell Sage College Evening Division. \nHISTORY:\nOn April 14\, 1942\, Joseph was set to report in Albany\, New York after being drafted into the United States Army. He went on to serve during World War II in the European Theatre of Operation with General Patton’s Third Army. For his service in the Army\, Joseph was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Ribbon\, and on April 5\, 1945 he separated from the Army. \nPERSONAL:\nOn March 27\, 1942\, Joseph married his wife\, Josephine Quick Spairana\, at St. Rita’s Church in Cohoes\, New York. Together they have three loving children: Jeffery\, Joseph Jr. and Jan; and grandchildren: Jeffery\, Jeanette\, Jason\, Amy\, Lori\, Victor and James. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJoseph had a variety of different jobs throughout his career. He was the sales manager for the Charles Dauchy Paint Company in Troy and was a salesman and estimator for the Grimm Building Materials Company in Troy. Joseph then went on become the Director of the Rensselaer County Veterans Service Agency\, until he moved on to become the veterans counselor at Hudson Valley Community College\, where he retired from at the age of 75. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJoseph was always an active member in his community no matter where he lived. He was a past president of both the United Commercial Travelers and the Lansingburgh Rotary Cub\, a member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans\, the Lansingburgh Boys and Girls Club\, Grand Marshall Veterans Day Parade and a neighborhood commissioner for the Uncle Sam Boy Scouts Council for over 15 years. \nAs an active member of St. Augustine’s Church parish family\, Joseph was a longtime member of the Bingo committee\, a member of the former bazaar committee and an usher for more than 35 years. After he retired\, Joseph and his wife spent their winters down South\, where he belonged to the Card and Billiard Clubs. He enjoyed playing cards with the “Monday Night” group of Lansingburgh\, and his hobby was growing beautiful roses and delicious tomatoes. \nSadly\, on April 28\, 2005 Joseph passed away.

DESCRIPTION:RICHARD PAUL JANSSON\n1936-2020 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nRichard Paul Jansson was born on July 23\, 1936 in Yonkers\, New York to the late Sven and Violet Jansson. He was the brother of Wesley\, Edith\, David\, and the late Ernest\, Florence and William\, and half-brother to Mary. \nEDUCATION:\nRichard grew up in Averill Park\, New York and attended Averill Park High School from 1950-1953. \nHISTORY:\nRichard enlisted in the United States Navy on August 23\, 1954 in Albany\, New York. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Antietam CVS-36 and went on to serve in the United States Naval Reserves until August 22\, 1962. \nPERSONAL:\nWhen Richard was a young man\, he met the love of his life\, Joan Ogden\, and on May 19\, 1956 they got married. They were married for over 63 loving years until sadly Joan passed away in 2019. They will both be dearly missed by their daughters Brenda and Deborah; grandchildren Terrence\, Ricky\, Amber and Brandon; and great-grandchildren Brittney\, Ricky\, Jr.\, Julian\, Jennifer\, Bentley\, Jesse\, Riley and Erica. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nFor many years\, Richard worked as a firefighter for Electric Boat. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nRichard liked skeet shooting\, hunting\, fishing and bowling. After retirement\, he enjoyed spending time at the Colchester Senior Center playing cards and Pinnacle. He also drove as a school bus driver for handicapped children in retirement. Above all\, Richard loved spending time with his family and friends. \nSadly\, on January 22\, 2020 Richard passed away.

DESCRIPTION:  \nTHOMAS PETER DIGIORGIO\n1931-2021 \n \n  \nFAMILY HISTORY: \nThomas “Tom” Peter DiGiorgio was born on June 8\, 1931 in Elizabeth\, New Jersey to the late Pietro and Agostilia Roccatani DiGiorgio\, who instilled in him the values of hard work\, fairness to all\, a love of good home-cooking and some homemade vino. He was the brother of Carlo DiGiorgio and the late Anna Romel. \nEDUCATION: \nIn 1950\, Tom trained as a cabinetmaker at Thomas Edison High School. \nHISTORY: \nTom enlisted in the United State Navy on May 29\, 1951 in New York\, New York. He served aboard the USS Willard Keith\, DD-775 as a metalsmith. For his service\, Tom was awarded the National Defense Ribbon\, Navy Occupation Medal\, Korean Medal and the United Nations Medal. Tom separated from the United States Navy on April 22\, 1955. \nPERSONAL: \nTom was married to Beatrice Annarelli from 1957-1994\, and together they had 4 children; Diane\, Peter\, Thomas and Patricia\, and 5 grandchildren; Kaitlin\, Thomas\, Kristin\, Bradley\, and Ryan. Tom was predeceased by his partner of many years\, Anne Popielarski. \nTom has lived all over the Eastern part of the United States. After growing up in Elizabeth\, New Jersey\, Tom went on to raise his family in Rockaway Beach\, New York and Coram\, Long Island. He later relocated to the Poconos before moving to Castleton\, New York in 2015 to live with his daughter\, Diane due to his advancing dementia. \nWORK EXPERIENCE: \nTom was an accomplished carpenter and jack-of-all-trades. He was a self-employed carpenter/builder\, a proprietor of Dee’s Hardware and Lumber in Coram\, New York and a construction manager on numerous projects; including homes\, restaurants and gas stations in the Eastern United States. Tom didn’t let much slow him down\, and he continued working\, building and remodeling well into his 80’s. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS: \nTom loved the beach\, listening to music\, bantering in Italian and sharing time with loved ones. He also loved ballroom dancing and was active in the amateur dance circuit in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Tom won many dance competitions\, and in 2018 he received a Veterans Creative Arts Recognition for his dancing. \nTom loved life and never had a dull moment. In 2005\, Tom and his family took a trip to his ancestral village of Priverno\, Italy to visit extended family\, and in 2017\, Tom and his daughter had the honor of participating in a Veteran’s Patriot Flight to Washington DC to visit memorials. \nSadly\, on January 10\, 2021 Tom passed away.

DESCRIPTION:THOMAS STANLEY OSTROWSKI\n1943-2018 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nThomas “Tom” Stanley Ostrowski was born on April\, 7 1943 in Brooklyn\, New York to the late Frances Ostarch Ostrowski and Bruno Ostrowski\, and was the brother of the late Barbara Ostarch Rothrock. \nEDUCATION:\nTom was raised in Catskill\, New York\, where he graduated from St. Patrick’s Elementary and High School before moving to Troy\, New York. He also went on to graduate from Hudson Valley Community College and the College of St. Rose\, earning a degree in business and computer. \nHISTORY:\nTom enlisted in the United States Navy on October 11\, 1966 in Buffalo\, New York\, serving with the rank of petty officer second class as a draftsman. For his service\, Tom was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 1\, 1970. \nPERSONAL:\nOn May 24\, 1969\, Tom married his wife\, Susan Ann Mangione at Sacred Heart Church in Troy\, New York. He is the beloved father of Kristen Ostrowski Caird\, Stephanie Ostrowski and Thomas J. Ostrowski\, grandfather to Abbilyn\, Natalie\, Emily and Teegen and also survived by several nieces\, nephews\, cousins and friends. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nTom was employed by General Electric in the large stream turbine division as an engineer draftsman for 32 years. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nTom was an active member of the community. He was a member of Trout Unlimited Home Waters Chapter\, Early Engine Club of Schaghticoke\, Trout Unlimited Fly Fishing Instructor\, and was a Sacred Heart communicant\, usher\, money counter and helped with bingo. Nathan was the brother of Kristyn (Gary) Donnelly\, Stephanie (Jeff) Snyder\, Noah Snyder\, twin brother to Nicholas (Morgan) Snyder\, Brandon McNab and Cassandra McNab; grandson of John (Kathy) Snyder\, Pamela Hester and the late Donald and Alice Fryer; great-grandson of Lou Verinini; great-nephew of Carol Borst; nephew to David (Sue) Fryer\, Ruth Greminger\, Sue (Ed) Nestler\, Karen Warner\, and Laura (Patrick) Hegarty; cousin to Shea Hegarty\, Addison Hegarty\, Lori Jubic\, Kelly Mohl\, Tyler Greminger\, Michael Warner\, and Josh Fryer; uncle to Marley\, Annie\, Kennady\, Chase and the late Allie; and friend to Donna Gaito\, Bob Gaito\, and Sean Cook. \nEDUCATION:\nNathan grew up and resided in North Greenbush\, New York and attended schools in the Averill Park School District. He graduated from Averill Park High School in 2013. \nHISTORY:\nNathan enlisted in the United States Army on August 20\, 2013 in Albany\, New York. He served as an infantryman and served in Afghanistan from January of 2015 until October of 2015. Nathan was the recipient of many awards during his enlistment\, which included the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star\, Army Commendation Medal\, Army Achievement Medal\, Meritorious Unit Commendation\, Army Good Conduct Medal\, National Defense Service Medal\, Army Service Ribbon\, NATO Medal\, Combat Infantry Badge\, and the Air Assault Badge. Nathan was honorably discharged in 2016. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nBefore Nathan tragically passed away\, he had been working at the Troy Post Office\, and was in the process of reenlisting in the Army. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nNathan was also survived by his canine companions Sky\, Hudson and Koby. \nNathan enjoyed snowmobiling\, snowboarding\, hiking\, fishing\, and loved fitness activities.  He was a member of the East Greenbush VFW Post 7338. \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n

He was the brother of the late Donald Miner\, who served in the United States Navy. \nEDUCATION:\nJames graduated from Hoosick Falls (Wood Memorial) High School in 1957\, and then went on to attend Hudson Valley Community College. \nHISTORY:\nJames enlisted in the United States Army on September 23\, 1963 in Albany\, New York\, serving with the rank of Specialist 4 E-4 during the Vietnam War. For his courageous service during the War\, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman Badge (Rifle M-1 and M-14). He separated from the Army on September 22\, 1969. \nPERSONAL:\nJames was also a devoted family man\, and loved to spend time with his partner and best friend of 27 years\, Gale E. Leva\, and their combined family which consisted of six children\, Brett (Natalie)\, Jason (Ami)\, Cherie\, Joseph\, Charles\, and Nicole (Martin); and 11 grandchildren\, David\, Zack\, Chad\, Timothy\, Samantha\, Madison\, Asher\, Elizabeth\, Janessa\, Alyssa and Silas. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJames was employed by Wood Flong Corporation in Hoosick Falls\, New York for 20 years as a Haynes Ford sales manager and salesperson. He also was a part owner of M&M Liquors in Greenwich\, New York\, a truck manager for Morrison Chevrolet in Bennington\, Vermont\, a salesperson for Independent Homes\, Inc.\, and spent 30 years as a bartender for special events. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJames loved boating\, golf\, fishing\, traveling and screaming at football games. He was an active member of the community and belonged to several organizations. He was a School Board member for 19 years\, President of the local union Wood Flong Corp\, Past Treasurer of Hoosick Falls Little League\, Hoosick Falls Country Club Board member and Golf and Handicap chairman\, Lifetime member of St. Stanislaus\, Hoosick Falls Kiwanis Club President and a member of the American Legion. James spent many of his last years seeing America in his motor home accompanied by his love\, Gale. \nSadly\, on April 11\, 2017 James passed away. \n

DESCRIPTION:ARTHUR T. JUDGE\n1920-1988 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nArthur T. Judge was born on July 27\, 1920 in Troy\, New York to the late Arthur Judge and the late Catherine Morrissey Judge. He was the brother of Catherine Mulheren and Virginia Doin\, and the late Henry Judge\, Margaret Leathem and Patrick Judge. \nEDUCATION:\nArthur graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1937\, where he was an outstanding athlete. When he returned from military service\, Arthur went on to attend the Evening Division of Russell Sage College. \nHISTORY:\nArthur enlisted in the United States Army on March 11\, 1943\, serving with a rank of Sergeant during World War II in the 204th Combat Engineers Construction Battalion in the European\, African and Middle Eastern Theaters of Operation\, including the Ardennes\, Central Europe\, Normandy\, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. On D-Day\, Arthur and his company stormed the beaches of Normandy. He has been awarded five battle stars\, and is the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal\, Sharp Shooter Medal\, and the Good Conduct Medal. Arthur was honorably discharged on October 31\, 1945. \nPERSONAL:\nArthur married his wife\, the late Elizabeth Campbell on June 19th\, 1949 at St. Peter’s Church in Troy\, New York. He was the father of four daughters; Kathleen Stallmer\, Elizabeth Simonik\, Patricia Murphy and Maureen Kim\, one son; Arthur Judge and had 14 grandchildren. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nArthur was employed by the United States Postal Service for 25 years\, from 1947-1972. After he retired\, he went on to work as an Assistant City Assessor for the City of Troy for 11 years\, from 1975-1986. Arthur started out with the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in 1947\, and then worked his way up to a supervisor. On July 28\, 1956\, the United States Senate appointed him Postmaster of Troy\, New York. At the time\, Arthur was the youngest person to be appointed to this position. Throughout his postal career\, Arthur served as President of the Troy Local Clerks Association\, a Legislative Representative\, State Vice President of the New York State Federation of Postal Clerks\, was a member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors\, and was a member of the National Association of Postmasters. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nArthur was an active member of the community and belonged to several organizations. He was a member of the Father Kelly Chapter\, the Disabled American Veterans and the Noble-Callahan Post\, American Legion. Arthur served as a member of the Public Service Division of the United Fund Campaign of the Mohawk-Hudson Area\, from which he was awarded a citation for community service in 1961. He participated in City Parades\, Troy politics\, and his church\, where he was communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church. Arthur was a history buff who enjoyed golfing and going to the race track on his free time.

He was the brother of Kay\, Antoinette and Angeline. John grew up in Troy and later resided in Colonie\, New York and then Mechanicville\, New York. \nEDUCATION:\nHe attended St. Peter’s School in Troy from 1930-1938\, Troy High School from 1939-1942\, and later went on to attend Troy Business School. \nHISTORY:\nJohn enlisted in the United States Navy on November 2\, 1943 in Albany\, New York and served during World War II with the rank of Seaman First Class. He received bootcamp training at the Naval Training Center in Sampson\, New York. John served as gunners mate with ACORN 45 in helping with the liberation of the Philippine Islands. John also helped secure\, repair\, and provide fire cover for Sea Bees who were rebuilding landing strips at Sangly Point. \nJohn served at many vessels and stations throughout his time in the Navy. This included NRS Albany\, New York\, NTS Sampson\, New York\, AGC Norva\, AGC Brooklyn\, New York\, SS Paulsboro\, ABATU Lido Beach Long Island\, New York\, ACORN 45 Port Hueneme\, California\, ACORN 45 San Nicolas Island\, NAS Navy 961 and PSC Lido Beach Long Island\, New York. He was the proud recipient of multiple awards; American Theatre Medal\, Victory Medal\, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Medal. John was honorably discharged from the United States Navy on May 7\, 1946. \nPERSONAL:\nOn September 26\, 1949\, John married his wife\, Dorothy (Berlingieri) Reitano. Together they have two sons and their daughter-in-laws; John (Frances) and Paul (Peggy)\, three grandchildren; Kate (Chris)\, Justin (Nicole) and Nicholas (Ashley) and one great-grandchild; Liam. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nJohn was a longtime produce manager for Price Chopper and the former Central markets\, and for a short time worked for Shop Rite and Wooltex. After retirement\, he enjoyed his job as a greeter for Wal-Mart\, where he was able to greet customers with his infectious smile and good will. \nJohn always had a love for music and was a bass and drums player. He was the well-known band leader for the Dixieland Ambassadors and Johnny Rei Trio. The Dixieland Ambassadors played in many Capital District parades and many other events. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nAlong with his music\, John enjoyed softball\, golf\, bowling and painting. He was an active member of Veterans of Lansingburgh\, past Commander of VFW Post 6928 in Mechanicville\, New York\, was a member of the Family Day in the Park committee since its inception and assisted with all the events and fundraising needs\, and was a member of the Italian Fraternal Society and the Assumption- St. Paul Church. John took part in the Family Day in the Park in Mechanicville\, the Troy Flag Day Parade\, and the Veterans of Lansingburgh Memorial Day Parade. \nSadly on March 21\, 2005\, John passed away. \n  \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n

DESCRIPTION:JAMES JOSEPH CONNELL\, JR.\n1951-2019 \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nJames “Jim” Joseph Connell Jr. was born on October 28\, 1951 in Albany\, New York to the late James Joseph Connell Sr. and Alice Merhige Connell. He was the brother of Deborah Connell Renfrew\, Jean Connell Seney\, Michael Patrick Connell Sr. and the late Amelia. \nEDUCATION:\nJim attended Columbia High School\, where he graduated with the class of 1971 with a Regents Diploma. After graduating from high school\, he went on to attend SUNY at Morrisvile\, where he graduated with the class of 1974 with a degree in journalism and photography\, which were his passions. \nHISTORY:\nJim enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on October 3\, 1971\, and served as a rifleman until October 3\, 1977. He later joined the New York Army National Guard in 1981\, where he was a photo journalist. Jim retired from the New York Army National Guard on November 1\, 2011 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received at least 6 coins for exemplary service from both the Marine Corps and the New York Army National Guard. \nPERSONAL:\nOn April 27\, 1974\, Jim married his wife\, Gail Harwood Connell in Rensselaer\, New York at the First United Methodist Church. He is the beloved father of Christopher\, Dena\, Michelle and James IV\, and the beloved grandfather of Karlina\, Cheyenne\, Damian\, Savannah\, Breanna\, Angelina\, Alyssa\, Kiley\, Olivia. Logan\, Abigail\, and Casey whom he loved dearly. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nThroughout the years\, Jim worked as a freelance photojournalist for many capital district newspapers\, which included the Glens Falls Post-Star and the Amsterdam Recorder. During the mid- 1980’s\, he was the managing editor and monthly publisher for the Albany-Colonie Yankees Double-A affiliate. During Jim’ semi-retirement years\, he was a school bus driver for the city of Rensselaer for more than 3 years\, and was a 3rd base usher for the Philadelphia Phillies at their spring training site in Clearwater\, Florida. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nJim was a proud historian and author of “A Lonely Battle Stance” regarding the Civil War. He was a member of the 125th New York Volunteer Infantry and participated in reenactments of the Civil War. Jim enjoyed watching baseball games with his family as an avid NY Yankees fan\, coaching little league and softball for his children and grandchildren\, collecting baseball cards and memorabilia dating back to the 1930’s\, gardening\, his koi fish pond\, was a classic car enthusiast and was an eclectic artist. \nSadly\, on July 23\, 2019 Jim passed away.

DESCRIPTION:HOWARD A. RICHARDS\n1922-1987 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nHoward A. Richards was born on January 16\, 1922 in Nassau\, New York to Charlotte (Hutchinson) and Abram Richards. He was the brother of Henry\, Everette\, Irene and Dorothy. \nEDUCATION:\nHe attended Martin Van Buren High School in Valatie\, New York\, and graduated with the class of 1939. \nHISTORY:\nHoward enlisted in the United States Army on November 11\, 1942. During World War II\, he served as a Sergeant and supervised 16 men in various aspects of firearms with Battery C 337th Field Artillery Battalion during his three year deployment. \nDuring his time in the Army\, Howard studied all known war gases\, their uses and effects\, and defense against them at Chemical Warfare School. He was awarded the American Service Medal\, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal\, and the Good Conduct Medal. On November 5\, 1945\, Howard was honorably discharged. \nPERSONAL:\nOn August 16\, 1942\, Howard married his wife\, Dorothy Karle. Together they have four daughters; Cheryl\, Corinne\, Claudia and Cindy\, and eight grandchildren; Jennifer\, Aisha\, Kam\, Jason\, Karlee\, Michael\, Christie and Robin. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nHoward worked as plumber for several years before enlisting. After being honorably discharged from the Army\, he resumed his career with the Plumber and Steamfitter Union Local No. 7\, and after 37 years of service Howard retired. Over the years\, he also worked at Shaefer Brewery in Albany\, New York. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nSpending time with his family was Howard’s favorite things to do\, along with camping\, fishing\, doing crossword puzzles\, and playing cards. He was also very active in the local veterans’ community and wanted to help however he could. Howard was a member of VFW Post No. 8162\, Nassau American Legion Post No. 1268\, and Kinderhook Elks Lodge No. 2530. \nSadly on August 2\, 1987\, Howard passed away. \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n
