DESCRIPTION:HOWARD A. RICHARDS\n1922-1987 \n \nFAMILY HISTORY:\nHoward A. Richards was born on January 16\, 1922 in Nassau\, New York to Charlotte (Hutchinson) and Abram Richards. He was the brother of Henry\, Everette\, Irene and Dorothy. \nEDUCATION:\nHe attended Martin Van Buren High School in Valatie\, New York\, and graduated with the class of 1939. \nHISTORY:\nHoward enlisted in the United States Army on November 11\, 1942. During World War II\, he served as a Sergeant and supervised 16 men in various aspects of firearms with Battery C 337th Field Artillery Battalion during his three year deployment. \nDuring his time in the Army\, Howard studied all known war gases\, their uses and effects\, and defense against them at Chemical Warfare School. He was awarded the American Service Medal\, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal\, and the Good Conduct Medal. On November 5\, 1945\, Howard was honorably discharged. \nPERSONAL:\nOn August 16\, 1942\, Howard married his wife\, Dorothy Karle. Together they have four daughters; Cheryl\, Corinne\, Claudia and Cindy\, and eight grandchildren; Jennifer\, Aisha\, Kam\, Jason\, Karlee\, Michael\, Christie and Robin. \nWORK EXPERIENCE:\nHoward worked as plumber for several years before enlisting. After being honorably discharged from the Army\, he resumed his career with the Plumber and Steamfitter Union Local No. 7\, and after 37 years of service Howard retired. Over the years\, he also worked at Shaefer Brewery in Albany\, New York. \nCOMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nSpending time with his family was Howard’s favorite things to do\, along with camping\, fishing\, doing crossword puzzles\, and playing cards. He was also very active in the local veterans’ community and wanted to help however he could. Howard was a member of VFW Post No. 8162\, Nassau American Legion Post No. 1268\, and Kinderhook Elks Lodge No. 2530. \nSadly on August 2\, 1987\, Howard passed away. \nHonor A Deceased Veteran Ceremony will be held in the Legislative Chambers of the Rensselaer County Legislature. \nFor questions or application information\, please contact the Legislature at 518-270-2880. \n
