DESCRIPTION:Honoring Gerald O’Brien\, held in the Legislative Chambers \nGERALD J. O’BRIEN\, 1934-2016\n FAMILY HISTORY:\nGerald J. O’Brien was born in Troy\, New York on May 24\, 1934.  He was the son of Joseph O’ Brien and Margaret (Hickey) O’Brien. \n EDUCATION:\nGerald attended St. Augustine School and Catholic Central High School.  After high school he attended Hudson Valley Community College. \n HISTORY:\nGerald enlisted in the United States Navy on September 8\, 1953 in Bainbridge\, Maryland.  He trained as a Seabee in Port Hueneme\, California and was stationed on the US Naval Base Trinidad.  Gerald was the proud recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.  He was honorably discharged on August 9\, 1955 \n PERSONAL:\nOn September 14\, 1957\, Gerald married his wife Barbara (Kelly) O’Brien in St. Joseph’s Church.  Together they had five children\, Susan Wyld\, Kathleen O’Brien\, Sharon Vest\, Maureen Pace and the late Sgt. James O’Brien.  Gerald is also survived by his favorite daughter-in-law\, Sally O’Brien and four grandchildren\, Casey and Aileen O’Brien\, and Kelly and Michael Vest. \n WORK EXPERIENCE:\nGerald began employment with National Grid as a meter reader.  After 42 years of service\, Gerald retired as a Supervisor in the Gas Department. \n COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/ORGANIZATIONS:\nGerald was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.  He volunteered with Community Hospice for over 20 years and he was also a long time Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Hospital.  Gerald was also a member of the Elks and the NiMo Pension Club East. \nGerald loved to read\, golf\, kayak and travel.  He loved spending his winters in Florida with his wife Barbara and Gloucester was always a special place for him and his family. \n  \n﻿﻿
