PRESS RELEASE County Legislature to Urge Resignation of Governor Spitzer Resolution Will Be Considered at Tonight’s Meeting The Rensselaer County Legislature will consider a resolution urging the resignation of Governor Eliot Spitzer at tonight’s legislative meeting, Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher announced. The resolution states that Governor Spitzer has lost the ability the state following the stunning revelations of his alleged involvement in a prostitution scandal. The governor faces possible indictment for his actions, which have prompted international coverage.Republican legislators said they are sickened by the ridicule and negative attention the Spitzer scandal has brought to the Empire State. “This is a sad episode for New York, and the best way to move the state past this mess is for Governor Spitzer to resign immediately. We need a new start right now,” said Kelleher. “To see such a tawdry and desperate scandal involving the highest elected official of our state on every evening newscast, across the headline of newspapers across the country and all over the world is absolutely disgusting. The right thing for the governor to do is resign immediately and allow for others to begin the work of restoring dignity to the governor’s office,” said Legislator Martin Reid. The resolution will be considered at tonight’s meeting of the County Legislature, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Chambers of the County Legislature, located in the County Office Building, 1600 7th Avenue, downtown Troy. Republican legislators said they believe a resignation by Governor Spitzer would not only help restore the image of the state’s highest office but also avoid a damaging and lengthy impeachment process. A number of state officials have already urged the start of impeachment proceedings against the governor. “New York has already been put through enough. A resignation by Governor Spitzer would bring this whole sad story to a very quick and necessary conclusion,” said Majority Leader Robert Mirch.
