Legislators Welcome New Hudson Research Center in Troy

Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature majority applauded news by state leaders that a center devoted Hudson River research will be based in Troy.

Governor David A. Paterson and State Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno were joined by local officials in unveiling the new home of the Upper Hudson Research Center. The research center will be located on former industrial property on Madison Street along the waterfront.

The five-acre research center will involve a partnership between the state, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, IBM and the Beacon Institute. The research center will monitor the condition of the river and any ecological changes or alterations affecting the river.

“The Hudson River is one of the most famous and picturesque rivers in the world, and we excited this research center, devoted to studying the river, will be located right here in Troy. This is quite an honor for our city and our county,” said Legislator Nancy McHugh.

“This is an exciting day for Troy and a good day for all of Rensselaer County. This will be a world-class research center located right here in the county, and we are excited about the important work they will be doing to protect the Hudson River,” said Legislator Jim Brearton, chairman of the Health Committee.

Legislators said they are hopeful the Upper Hudson Research Center can partner on projects involving the Papscanee Island Nature Preserve, which is managed by the county and owned by the Open Space Institute. Located in the towns of East Greenbush and Schodack, the Preserve includes 156-acres and a natural shoreline along the Hudson River.

“We view the Preserve as one of the most important conservation projects in the entire country, and we are excited there may be an opportunity for a partnership to protect and enhance this site,” said Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher.
