PRESS RELEASE Public Invited to Spring Clean-up at Papscanee Preserve The public is invited to join members of the Rensselaer County Legislature for a spring clean-up and Earth Day observance at the Papscanee Island Nature Preserve on Saturday, April 19, Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher announced. The clean-up will begin at 9 a.m. at the south entrance to the Preserve, located on Staats Island Road, just off State Route 9J in Schodack. The clean-up is an annual event at the Preserve, helping remove debris, tree limbs, trash and other objects washed ashore from the Hudson River during the spring thaw. The clean-up also begins the process of readying the more than three miles of trails in the Preserve. “The Preserve is one of the most beautiful areas of upstate New York, and the annual clean-up helps us welcome spring and summer,” said Kelleher. The Preserve includes 156-acres in the towns of East Greenbush and Schodack and a natural shoreline along the Hudson River, affording some of the best views of the historic river. The Preserve also includes trails and offers year-round recreational opportunities. “There is a lot of debris, tree branches and garbage that gets brought ashore, so this clean-up is a necessary start to the busier spring and summer months at the Preserve. We have always gotten a lot of help from the public in cleaning-up the Preserve and are hopeful we can again count on the public’s support,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee. The clean-up is being organized by the Environmental Management Council, an office of the County Legislature. EMC members are also expected to participate. For more information or directions, call the EMC office at 270-2888. Participants are asked to bring gloves and sturdy shoes or boots. Trash bags will be provided and collection of the trash has been arranged.
