Passing of Former Rensselaer Mayor Mink Mourned

Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature mourned the passing of former Rensselaer Mayor Joseph Mink, who passed away this week.

Legislator Mike Stammel, who represents Rensselaer in the County Legislature, served as a volunteer on some of Mink’s campaigns in the early 1970s. Mink served as a member of the Common Council at a time when Stammel’s then-father-in-law Cornelius Ryan was also active in city politics.

An Army veteran, Mink followed his service on the Common Council with service as mayor from 1974 to 1981. Mink served the city at a time when Rensselaer was reeling from the closing of the Hyuck Felt plant and other industrial businesses in the city.

“Joe Mink led Rensselaer through a tough time. He was a guy who always had a positive outlook for Rensselaer and the city’s future and that helped when the city was dealing with bad news,” said Stammel.

“He was always open and honest in dealing with the issues facing the city. Joe had a great understanding of the people and the city and that was why he was elected so many times,” added Stammel.

Mink was also dedicated to fire services in the city, having served as a paid driver following graduation from college and serving as a member of the Hill Hook and Ladder Company. One of the city firehouses is dedicated in memory of a member of Mink’s family.

Along with serving in elected office, Mink also served as a member of the Rensselaer School Board. His daughter, Peggy, also served as city treasurer for a number of years.

Stammel said he plans to introduce a resolution in memory of Joseph Mink for the June legislative meeting.
