PRESS RELEASE Legislature Majority Welcomes Gov. David Paterson The Rensselaer County Legislature majority welcomed new Governor David Paterson, who was sworn in today at the State Capitol in Albany amid pledges of cooperation and unity. Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher was among the dignitaries in attendance at the State Capitol as a guest of Assemblyman Roy McDonald. Kelleher said he was impressed with the conciliatory and cooperative tone struck by the new governor. “Governor Paterson showed that a little humor can go a long way in difficult situations like this. The applause for him as he entered the Assembly chamber and after he took the oath was warm and genuine, and that kind of support from state officials and lawmakers is definitely a good thing,” said Kelleher. “Governor Paterson has a very different and less confrontational style than his predecessor and that is a good thing. We hope he brings a new era of openness and cooperation to state government, which is definitely needed at this time,” said Vice Chairman of the Legislature Thomas Walsh Sr. Governor Paterson takes office as the state’s fiscal situation is worsening. Legislators and county officials have already stated their concern about the amount of cost shifts from the state to the county and increases in state mandates. Currently, 89 cents out of every tax dollar goes to pay for mandates. “The governor is right to remind us that New Yorkers have faced challenges in the past and overcame the obstacles placed in their path. It is time to move past the Spitzer scandal and deal with the serious problems facing New York State,” said Majority Leader Robert Mirch. “Governor Paterson will hopefully be aware of the burdens already carried by property taxpayers in the state. He will also hopefully understand the answer to state budget problems cannot be just dumping more expenses on property taxpayers. We need to work together to find solutions,” said Vice Chairman of the Legislature for Finance Richard Salisbury.
