PRESS RELEASE County Electronics Recycling Day A Big Success The electronics recycling day co-sponsored by the Rensselaer County Legislature and Troy company eLot on Saturday, March 29 was a big success, with hundreds of county residents participating in an unexpectedly high turnout. Approximately 350 vehicles participated in the electronics recycling day, which was held in the parking lot of the County Office Building in downtown Troy. Vehicles began lining up at 8:30 a.m., before the 9 a.m. start of the event. “There was a tremendous response to the electronics recycling day, and everyone involved seemed very enthusiastic about the event,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee. Residents were able to dispose of unwanted computers, stereos, televisions, household appliances and electronics items for free at the recycling day on Saturday. Many residents used the recycling day as a way to dispose of electronics items they had not used in years, with some participants making return trips. There is usually a cost for disposal of electronics items and sometimes difficulty in finding a repository for the unwanted items. “This was a great way for residents to dispose of unwanted electronics items in an environmentally safe way. We thank eLot, the county EMC and legislative staff for helping make this effort such a success,” said Legislator Laura Bauer, member of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee. Legislators said they are hopeful there will be future electronics recycling days. County EMC Director Ann Shaughnessy began planning the electronics recycling day late in 2007. “There seems to be a great need for this type of recycling and we are happy to have joined with eLot to stage this event. We are hopeful that we can do this again in 2008,” said Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher.
