PRESS RELEASE

County Electronics Recycling Day Collects 50,000 Lbs.

The electronics recycling day on Saturday, March 29 sponsored by the Rensselaer County Legislature and eLot netted approximately 50,000 pounds of recyclable electronics materials.

The recyclable materials include computers, televisions, video equipment, stereos, video games, household appliances and electronic games. The electronics items were brought to the County Office Building during a five-hour period on March 29. More than 350 vehicles came to the event to dispose of electronics materials for free.

The electronics recycling day was a success because residents could recycle virtually every item for free. There is usually a cost for disposal of electronics items and sometimes difficulty in finding a repository for unwanted items. Many residents used the recycling day as a way to dispose of electronics items they had not used in years, with some participants making return trips.

“This was a great effort, and we definitely excited by the amount of material that was recycled safely and at no charge to county residents or taxpayers,” said Legislator Alex Shannon, chairman of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee.

“It’s great that so much electronics equipment was kept out of the landfills and made available for recycling. We thank eLot for helping make a great showing,” added Legislator Laura Bauer, member of the Legislature’s Environmental Committee.

County officials are hopeful of a future collaboration with eLot for electronics recycling during 2008. County EMC Director Ann Shaughnessy began working with eLot to plan the electronics recycling effort in 2007.

“We believe there is a real demand for electronics recycling and hope that we can again offer this service,” said Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher.
