PRESS RELEASE State Should Offer Tax Breaks on Digital TV Purchases New York State should offer a sales tax break for the purchase of digital televisions and related equipment in 2008 and 2009 before the switch from analog to digital takes place next year, Chairman of the Legislature Neil J. Kelleher announced. Many New Yorkers now using older television sets will need to buy equipment and possibly new televisions when the switch from analog to digital broadcasting takes place in February 2009. A temporary reduction of the sales tax for purchase of new televisions or equipment can provide a savings for those needing to make the upgrades, said Kelleher. Along with providing a savings, the tax break on new televisions and related equipment could help attract shoppers to the state, especially in border counties like Rensselaer County, said Kelleher. “Many New York State residents, including many here in Rensselaer County, will be purchasing new televisions or equipment when the switch takes place. I know purchasing digitally-compatible televisions will appreciate a break on the sales tax, and a temporary reduction can also help boost our state economy,” said Kelleher. “I think this could potentially be a bonanza for New York State in terms of attracting shoppers to stores, especially during the holiday season next year,” added Kelleher. Kelleher said he would favor offering the tax break in late 2008, during the holiday shopping season, and again in early 2009 during the switch from analog to digital. When the switch from analog to digital takes place in February 2009, owners of older televisions will at least need to purchase a set-top digital converter to receive digital signals. To fully enjoy all the features of digital television, owners of older sets will need to replace their set with a new digitally-compatible model. “A temporary tax break will mean a savings for many county residents, including seniors, working families and others on fixed incomes. This would be a great move for the state,” said Legislator Martin Reid, chairman of the Legislature’s Local Government Committee. A resolution sponsored by Kelleher and members of the legislative majority requesting the state to provide a sales tax break on the purchase of digital televisions and related equipment will be considered at the April 8 legislative meeting. If approved, copies of the resolution will be sent to representatives of Rensselaer County in the State Legislature and Governor David Paterson.
