PRESS RELEASE Arbor Day Observed with Tree Planting by DPS School Arbor Day was observed on April 25 with a tree planting by students at Donald P. Sutherland School at the Village of Nassau Fairgrounds with Legislator Alex Shannon in attendance. The tree also symbolizes 2000 random acts of kindness by students during the 2007-08 school year, Principal Jack Alvey noted. The random acts of kindness help recognize students for acts of generosity, kindness or compassion at the elementary school. Students at DPS chose a flowering pear tree to be planted at the Village Fairgrounds. Students also voted to donate the tree for planting on community property instead of planting on school grounds. Representatives from each of the six grades at DPS were chosen to assist Principal Alvey in planting the tree for the Arbor Day observance. Started in 1872, Arbor Day is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. “The students at DPS should be very proud of their contribution to the community. Their tree is a great addition to the fairgrounds and for years, visitors to the area will be able to see and enjoy their contribution,“ said Shannon.
